Chapter 12 - Vanessa Has to Explain the Email

Vanessa denied sending the anonymous message.
Daniel expected that.
“I never contacted Emma.”
They were in mediation with attorneys present.
Daniel placed a printed copy on the table.
Stop contacting Claire. Lily has a mother now.
Vanessa barely looked at it.
“That could be anyone.”
“Who else knew Emma had contacted Claire?”
Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
“Claire probably told half the world.”
“She didn’t.”
“You don’t know that.”
Daniel waited.
Then placed the missing Portland postcard beside the email.
Vanessa looked at it.
That reaction mattered.
“How did you get that?” she asked.
Daniel felt something cold settle inside him.
Claire had never told Vanessa which card was missing.
“You recognize it.”
Vanessa realized the mistake.
Her attorney intervened.
“Vanessa doesn’t need to answer speculative accusations.”
Daniel nodded.
“Fine.”
He did not need a confession that day.
He needed boundaries.
Then Vanessa surprised him.
“I found it in Claire’s bag.”
Daniel said nothing.
“I was looking for Lily’s medication.”
“Lily didn’t have medication in Claire’s bag.”
Vanessa looked away.
“No.”
“So you searched it.”
“Yes.”
“And took the postcard.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I read it.”
Her voice cracked.
“Emma wanted to come back.”
Daniel waited.
Vanessa continued.
“I had spent two years raising Lily.”
“She was still Emma’s daughter.”
“I KNOW.”
The shout filled the room.
Vanessa covered her face.
Then lowered her hands.
“That was exactly the problem.”
She had done everything a mother did.
Doctor visits.
Preschool.
Nightmares.
Birthday parties.
Then one postcard reminded her none of it guaranteed permanence.
“I thought if Emma came back, everybody would expect me to step aside.”
Daniel’s anger softened without disappearing.
“So you took the card.”
“Yes.”
“Did you send the email?”
Vanessa looked at her attorney.
Then at Daniel.
“Yes.”
The word was barely audible.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“You told a mentally vulnerable woman her daughter already had a mother.”
Vanessa started crying.
“I thought she would disappear again anyway.”
“So you helped make sure she did.”
Vanessa could not answer.
Daniel looked at her.
“And the terrace?”
“I panicked.”
“You held Lily beside an overlook and demanded she choose you.”
“I wasn’t going to hurt her.”
“That is not the standard.”
Vanessa looked down.
Daniel finally understood her.
She had not been trying to replace Emma because she felt nothing.
She had become terrified that love without legal ownership could be taken from her.
Then she used that fear to justify taking choices from everyone else.

Understanding did not make Daniel want her back.
It made the tragedy clearer.
