Chapter 9 - When the Damage Left the Family

The presentation did not go directly to Ryan.

That was deliberate.

Brooke's attorney provided it to the appropriate investigator and confirmed its existence to Ryan's lawyer.

Ryan received only information he was entitled to receive.

That restraint almost made the situation harder.

He wanted everything immediately.

Instead, he had to live like an ordinary person inside an unfolding process.

Wait.

Document.

Work.

Feed Emma.

Wash bottles.

Answer questions.

Repeat.

The situation reached Ryan's workplace when he requested extended flexibility from his supervisor.

He hated explaining it.

His supervisor, Mark, did not ask for details Ryan didn't want to share.

He simply said, “Take care of your kid. We'll rearrange the Henderson job.”

That kindness embarrassed Ryan more than judgment would have.

The Henderson project had been his chance at promotion.

Ryan watched it go to another manager.

At home that night, he calculated what the lost bonus meant.

Less retirement contribution that year.

No kitchen renovation.

Possibly selling the Franklin house if the separation stretched financially.

Concrete consequences.

Not cinematic ones.

Megan came over with takeout barbecue and found Ryan staring at a spreadsheet.

“You're doing that thing.”

“What thing?”

“Trying to turn grief into arithmetic.”

He shut the laptop.

Emma sat between them on a padded mat, hitting a cloth book with both hands.

She laughed.

Ryan stared at her.

It was the first big laugh he had heard from her since the bedroom incident.

His eyes filled.

Megan pretended not to notice.

Two days later, Dana called.

“I need to ask you about something in the videos.”

Ryan's stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Did Vanessa ever tell you she was using a specific sound cue with Emma?”

“No.”

“A song? Noise machine? Repeated phrase?”

Ryan thought.

Vanessa used white noise.

So did half the parents they knew.

Then he remembered a soft three-note chime from Vanessa's phone.

She often played it before taking Emma upstairs.

He had assumed it was a timer.

“I don't know what it was.”

Dana asked him not to recreate it.

Later that afternoon, Brooke contacted Ryan's attorney with another piece of information.

The archived presentation included a storyboard.

The first column was labeled BEFORE.

The second:

METHOD.

The third:

AFTER.

Under BEFORE were still frames of Emma crying.

Under AFTER were clips of Emma quiet, often asleep from exhaustion.

Ryan had to sit down.

But the worst part wasn't the structure.

It was a note Vanessa had typed beneath one slide.

NEED STRONGER INITIAL RESPONSE FOR CONTRAST.

Brooke had commented beneath it weeks earlier:

Don't manufacture distress. Use authentic footage only.

May you like

Vanessa had marked the comment resolved.

And continued filming.
