Chapter 5 - VANESSA HAD TAKEN SOPHIE TO A BEHAVIOR SPECIALIST WITHOUT MEDr. Laura Bennett was a licensed child psychologist.
Legitimate.
Experienced.
She was horrified when she learned how Vanessa had used her name.
Vanessa had consulted her three times.
The stated concerns:
Food hoarding.
Tantrums.
Attachment to deceased mother.
Resistance to stepmother authority.
Dr. Bennett recommended:
consistent meals,
predictable routines,
age-appropriate boundaries,
grief-sensitive therapy,
and avoiding power struggles around food.
She specifically wrote:
Do not use food deprivation as discipline.
Another recommendation:
Child’s attachment to deceased parent should be supported, not treated as disloyalty to current caregivers.
Vanessa had told me almost the opposite.
“Dr. Bennett says we need firmer structure.”
That was technically true.
Incomplete truth can function beautifully as a lie.
Then we obtained Vanessa’s own notes from the consultations.
She had repeatedly described Sophie as:
obsessed with biological mother.
manipulative when discussing grandparents.
food-seeking after limits.
territorial about Richard.
That last one stopped me.
Territorial.
My six-year-old daughter was being described as competition.
Dr. Bennett challenged that framing in one note.
Caregiver appears frustrated by child’s continued idealization of deceased mother. Recommend caregiver explore own feelings separately rather than seeking child behavioral change.
Vanessa never returned.
Instead she began telling people Dr. Bennett had recommended stricter discipline.
I asked Sophie:
“Did Vanessa ever say Dr. Bennett told her to use the pantry?”
“No.”
“Did she say anyone did?”
Sophie shook her head.
“Vanessa said she invented it because regular time-out doesn’t work on stubborn girls.”
Intentional.
Not mistaken clinical advice.
Not misunderstood therapy.
Her method.
Then I learned what triggered the worst punishments.
Mentioning Anna.
Calling Eleanor.
Asking to keep old photographs in her room.
Taking extra food after Vanessa said dinner was over.
And one more thing.
Saying:
“I’ll tell Daddy.”
The pantry was not merely discipline.
