Chapter 14 - The Last Thing Grant Refused to Give Her
Nadine accepted a negotiated criminal resolution that formally recognized the seriousness of what she had done.
The court imposed conditions that included treatment, supervision requirements, restrictions on contact with Piper, and other consequences appropriate to the case.
There was no instant transformation.
No courtroom applause.
No satisfying collapse.
Nadine left the courthouse still legally married to Grant while the divorce continued.
Accountability turned out to be less cinematic than rage.
And more durable.
Then came the final dispute in the divorce.
Nadine wanted photographs.
Not furniture.
Not money.
Photographs of Piper.
Hundreds existed on shared family drives from the years they lived together.
Grant’s first reaction was absolute.
No.
Then his attorney asked him why.
“She hurt her.”
“Yes.”
“She doesn’t get to keep pretending she was her mother.”
“She isn’t asking for legal motherhood.”
Grant hated the distinction.
Nadine had helped raise Piper for nearly three years.
Breakfasts.
Halloween costumes.
Preschool pickup.
Fevers.
Bedtime books.
The later cruelty did not erase every earlier attachment.
That made the decision harder.
Grant consulted Piper’s therapist.
Not Piper herself.
A four-year-old should not be asked to determine an adult’s emotional access.
The recommendation was cautious.
Grant did not owe Nadine an ongoing stream of Piper’s life.
But family photographs from the years Nadine was actually present were part of Nadine’s history too.
Grant agreed to copies of selected existing family photos.

No direct contact.
No information about Piper’s school or routines.
The boundary surprised Nadine.
She had expected either surrender or total punishment.
Grant chose neither.
Through counsel he sent one message.
These photographs document a period of our lives. They do not create access to Piper now.
Nadine did not respond.
Grant felt something close to relief.
For years, every conflict with Nadine had ended with one person proving who mattered more.
He was finally finished participating in competitions.
Piper did not need to defeat Nadine.
