Chapter 12 - What Nadine Finally Admitted

The confrontation did not happen at home.
Grant saw Nadine in a structured legal setting months later.
Attorneys were present.
There was no shouting.
That made it more difficult.
Nadine looked thinner.
She did not look monstrous.
Grant hated that too.
Real people rarely cooperated with the roles everyone assigned them.
Nadine said, “I never wanted Piper hurt.”
Grant stared at her.
“You put her in a garbage truck.”
“I knew the driver would stop if he heard her.”
“You didn’t know that.”
“I thought—”
“That’s the problem.”
Nadine looked down.
Her attorney let the silence remain.
Grant asked the question he had carried since the driveway.
“Did you want her gone?”
Nadine’s eyes filled.
“No.”
“Then what did you want?”
“I wanted you to feel it.”
“Feel what?”
“What it’s like when somebody you love makes you disappear.”
Grant leaned back.
There it was.
Not strategy.
Not logic.
Emotional revenge stretched into criminal cruelty.
“You used a four-year-old to punish me.”
Nadine whispered, “Yes.”
Grant closed his eyes.
Then asked, “Why the backpack?”
“I wanted you to think she’d been taken.”
“Why withdraw her from preschool?”
“So nobody called you right away.”
“Why remove my number?”
Nadine’s mouth trembled.
“I don’t know.”
“Yes, you do.”
She looked at him.
“Because I wanted it to last longer.”
Grant stopped.
That sentence finally stripped away every soft explanation.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not accidental abandonment.
Not merely jealousy.
She wanted Grant’s terror extended.
Nadine began crying.
Grant felt nothing useful.
No satisfaction.
No sympathy powerful enough to change what happened.
He said, “Piper asked me if I was mad at her for getting thrown away.”
Nadine covered her mouth.
Grant continued.
“That is what your punishment did.”
Nadine looked toward the table.
“I’m sorry.”
Grant stood.
“I believe you.”
She looked up hopefully.
He finished.
“That doesn’t mean I trust you.”
May you like
For once, Nadine had no argument.
And Grant understood that apology and access would never again be the same thing.
