Chapter 7 - AVERY FINALLY TOLD HER OWN STORY
Mark did not bring Avery to Daniel.
He asked her first.
She was sixteen now.
Old enough to decide whether she wanted anything to do with Vanessa’s second marriage.
Avery agreed to a video call with Daniel’s attorney and a child-family specialist present.
Daniel did not attend the first conversation.
He did not want Avery feeling responsible for rescuing Sophie.
Later, with Avery’s permission, Daniel heard the relevant parts.
Vanessa had used the mudroom.
Not constantly.
That was important.
She was too careful for that.
When Mark was home, Avery slept in her bedroom.
When relatives visited, Vanessa behaved warmly.
Bought her clothes.
Did her hair.
Posted family photographs.
Then Mark traveled.
Rules tightened.
Vanessa told Avery she was disrespectful.
Too attached to her biological mother.
The reason Vanessa and Mark could never have a “normal marriage.”
One night she moved Avery’s bedding downstairs.
Another time she told Avery:
“If you hate living with me so much, ask your mom to take you full-time.”
That sentence changed everything.
Avery eventually did.
Mark initially thought the request proved Vanessa had been right.
His daughter wanted out.
Years later he understood Vanessa had been creating the conditions that made leaving feel like Avery’s own decision.
Daniel sat with that information for a long time.
Then he remembered something Vanessa said during an argument six months earlier.
“Maybe Sophie would be happier spending more time with Diane.”
Diane was Sophie’s maternal grandmother.
Daniel had dismissed it.
Sophie adored Diane, but she had never asked to move there.
Vanessa brought it up again.
Then again.
Always casually.
Maybe weekends.
Maybe school breaks.
Maybe if Daniel had a heavy travel month.
Daniel called Diane.
She became quiet.
Finally:
“I was wondering when you’d ask.”
His stomach tightened.

“Why Vanessa has been talking to me about Sophie living here.”
