Chapter 4 - DANIEL MADE THE DECISION THAT COST HIM HIS OLD LIFE
Daniel canceled three weeks of travel.
His company was not happy.
He was a regional operations consultant, and clients paid partly because he went where problems were.
His boss offered sympathy.
Then reminded him that sympathy did not cover missed contracts.
Daniel understood.
He accepted the financial hit.
He removed Vanessa from Sophie’s school pickup list.
Then from the pediatric portal.
Then from the after-school emergency-contact sheet.
His attorney advised him on what he could legally change immediately and what required formal proceedings.
Daniel filed for legal separation.
He did not wait for Vanessa to explain the garage.
That surprised her.
She called from the hotel.
“You’re destroying a marriage over a mattress.”
Daniel almost shouted.
Instead he looked across the kitchen at Sophie eating cereal.
“She’s seven.”
“She acts seven when it benefits her.”
Daniel went quiet.
There it was again.
Vanessa’s central defense.
The child was unreliable.
The child manipulated.
The child created the problem.
“Mark said the same thing happened to Avery.”
Vanessa stopped talking.
Only briefly.
Then she laughed.
“Oh my God. You called him?”
“Yes.”
“He’s obsessed with making me the villain.”
“Did Avery sleep in the mudroom?”
“She chose to.”
Daniel shut his eyes.
Same sentence.
“She chose to?”
“Yes.”
“And Sophie chooses the garage?”
“She throws fits until there’s no point fighting with her.”
Daniel looked at Sophie again.
The girl was carefully arranging Cheerios into groups with her spoon.
She did that when she was nervous.
“When did she start choosing it?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“Only when I travel?”
Still nothing.
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“You keep saying these girls made the same choice.”
He paused.
“I’m starting to wonder why they only made it when you were the adult in charge.”
Vanessa hung up.
Two days later Daniel received a message from Sophie’s school counselor.
She needed to speak with him.
