Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3 — The Marks Under the Sleeve
Clara tried to take control immediately.
That was her talent.
She smoothed her blouse, softened her voice, and looked at me like I was the unreasonable one.
“Ethan, she’s confused,” Clara said. “She’s sensitive. She makes stories bigger than they are.”
Harper pressed herself against my side.
I felt how hard she was trembling.
“Go to your room,” Clara said.
“No,” I answered.
Clara blinked.
I had never spoken to her that way before.
“I said no,” I repeated. “She stays where I can see her.”
The silence that followed told me our marriage had just crossed a line it could never uncross.
Clara’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t understand what I deal with.”
“With your daughter?”
“With everything,” she snapped.
Then she caught herself.
Her face softened again.
Too late.
I had seen the real expression underneath.
I asked Harper to sit on the couch. She obeyed instantly, too instantly, like a child trained to make herself small.
Her sleeve slipped as she reached for Scout.
That was when I saw the marks.
Four faint ovals on her upper arm.
One larger mark opposite them.
A grip.
Not from a fall.
Not from playing.
Not from bumping into a table.
An adult hand.
My throat went dry.
“Harper,” I said carefully, “who held your arm like that?”
She looked at Clara.
Clara said, “She bruises easily.”
I stared at her.
“I work in an emergency room.”
Her mouth closed.
I took out my phone.
Clara’s voice changed.
“Who are you calling?”
“Someone who knows what to do next.”
“You’re going to destroy this family over a bruise?”
I looked down at Harper.
Her little face had gone still.
She was waiting to see whether I would choose peace over her safety.
I would not.
May you like
“This family was already in danger,” I said. “I’m just the first adult willing to say it out loud.”
Then I called for help.
