Chapter 2

CHAPTER 2 — Mommy Says
Harper pulled out a tiny audio recorder.
It was blue, scratched, and small enough to fit inside her palm.
Her fingers trembled around it.
“Daddy,” she whispered, “look at this.”
The word Daddy hit me harder than the recorder.
She had never called me that before.
Not once.
I reached for it slowly.
Clara took one step forward.
“Harper,” she said.
Not loud.
Not angry.
Just sharp enough to make the child flinch.
I turned my body slightly, placing myself between them.
“What is this?” I asked gently.
Harper swallowed.
“I made it when Mommy didn’t know.”
Clara laughed once.
“This is ridiculous. She records silly things all the time.”
Harper shook her head.
Her eyes stayed on me.
“Press play.”
The room seemed to shrink.
The fireplace cracked softly behind us.
I pressed the button.
For a second, there was only static.
Then Clara’s voice filled the room.
Cold.
Clear.
Unmistakable.
“If you tell him, he’ll leave you too.”
Harper covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“You ruin everything, Harper. Men don’t stay for little girls who cry too much.”
My chest tightened.
Clara’s face went pale.
She reached for the recorder, but I lifted it out of reach.
“Enough,” she said.
I looked at her.
“No. I think we’re just getting started.”
Harper began to shake.
I crouched again.
“Harper, you’re safe with me.”
Her eyes filled.
“She said if I told, you’d hate me.”
“I don’t hate you.”
“She said I make people leave.”
“You didn’t make anyone leave.”
“She said I’m too much.”
I felt something inside me break cleanly in two.
Because I had seen injuries before.
Broken bones.
Split skin.
Bodies damaged by accidents, bad choices, and cruelty.
But this was different.
This was a child being taught that love could be taken away as punishment.
I looked up at Clara.
May you like
“Then she’s not alone anymore.”
For the first time since I had known her, Clara did not have an answer ready.
