Chapter 2

In the lobby, beneath the brass hotel clock, I stopped.

That clock had been my mother’s favorite piece in the entire Halston Meridian. She said every great hotel needed one object that made people feel time was precious.

I used to stand under it as a little girl while she adjusted flower arrangements before charity dinners.

“Mara,” she would whisper, smoothing my hair, “a building is just walls until someone loves it enough to make it matter.”

I had loved this hotel because she had.

My father had loved what it gave him.

Celeste had loved what she thought it would become once my mother was dead.

Through the glass ballroom doors, I could still see them. Celeste had already returned to the center of the room, smiling with one hand on Dad’s arm. He stood stiffly beside her, pale and silent.

I opened my phone and called my attorney.

Elliot answered on the second ring.

“Mara?”

“Execute the trust transfer tonight,” I said.

There was a pause.

A long one.

“Are you sure?”

I looked at the ballroom again.

My father finally glanced toward the lobby.

For a moment, our eyes met through the glass.

He looked ashamed.

But shame without courage is just decoration.

“Yes,” I said. “Move the hotel, the land parcel, and the operating reserves.”

Elliot exhaled slowly.

“The full twenty-four million?”

“All of it.”

Another pause.

Then his voice became professional.

“I’ll file the recorded authority and notify the bank.”

“Tonight,” I said.

“Tonight.”

I ended the call and stood under my mother’s clock for a few seconds longer.

Then I walked out of the hotel alone.

Behind me, the celebration continued.

For now.
