"My stepmother ordered security to throw me out of my father's hotel gala. Three hours later, she discovered the hotel, the land, and $24 million had never belonged to her."
Chapter 1
I walked into my father’s hotel gala five minutes after the donors’ toast had started, still wearing my navy work dress and carrying a legal folder against my chest.
The room went quiet in layers.
First the servers noticed me.
Then the board members.
Then my father, Richard Halston, standing beside the ice sculpture with a champagne flute in his hand and guilt already gathering around his mouth.
Finally, my stepmother saw me.
Celeste Halston turned from the mayor’s wife, her emerald-green gown catching the chandelier light. Her smile froze, then sharpened.
“What is she doing here?” she said.
I stopped just inside the ballroom doors.
Dad took one hesitant step forward.
“Mara—”
Celeste snapped her fingers toward the lobby.
“Security, remove her.”
The words hit harder than a slap.
A uniformed security officer near the entrance looked at me, then at my father. Everyone waited for Richard Halston to correct her.
He owned the event.
He owned the hotel.
He owned the family name.
But the ballroom itself had been my mother’s dream long before Celeste ever learned how to pronounce Halston with authority.
My father said nothing.
Not one word.
I looked at him for three seconds.
That was all I gave him.
Then I lowered my legal folder, turned around, and walked back through the marble lobby without crying.
Behind me, Celeste gave a soft laugh, the kind rich women use when they want humiliation to sound polite.
“She was always dramatic,” she told someone.
I kept walking.
No scene.
No tears.
May you like
No raised voice.
Only the sound of my heels crossing the marble floor my mother had chosen twenty-two years ago.
