Chapter 10 - Why Their Mother Kept Choosing Gary
Brooke had spent weeks asking the wrong question.
Why would her mother choose Gary over her children?
The real answer was more complicated.
Melissa had never believed she was choosing him instead of them.
She believed losing Gary would destroy the last structure holding their lives together.
After Michael died, Melissa discovered the family was less financially secure than she thought.
The mortgage remained.
Medical bills from Michael’s final hospital treatment arrived before insurance resolved them.
Brooke’s future college costs terrified her.
Ethan was five and woke crying for his father.
Melissa returned to work too quickly.
Gary entered at the exact moment she was exhausted enough to mistake decisiveness for safety.
He handled contractors.
Bills.
Insurance calls.
The car.
The lawn.
The thousand details Michael once handled.
When Gary’s business began failing, Melissa panicked.
If Gary failed, maybe the entire replacement structure failed with him.
So she helped him take trust money.
One withdrawal.
Then another.
When Ethan became afraid of him, Melissa told herself Gary was simply stricter than Michael.
When Brooke fought him, Melissa called it teenage rebellion.
When the residential consultant was hired, Melissa told herself research wasn’t action.
Every decision protected the explanation for the previous one.
The major twist came when Thomas found Michael’s old estate-planning correspondence.
One email was addressed to Melissa two months before Michael died.
Michael wrote:
If anything happens to me, don’t let grief convince you the kids need a replacement for me. They need you. Thomas can help with the money. Let Brooke grow up. Let Ethan be little.
Melissa read the email at Rebecca’s kitchen table.
Then began crying.
“I never saw this.”
Thomas stared at her.
“Yes, you did.”
The email had been opened from Melissa’s account four days after Michael’s funeral.
Melissa shook her head.
“I don’t remember.”
Rebecca looked at her sister.
“I believe you.”
And strangely, Brooke did too.
Grief had erased whole weeks from Melissa’s memory.
The twist wasn’t that Michael had predicted Gary.
It was that he had predicted Melissa’s greatest fear.
Being alone with responsibility.
Michael had built the trust with Thomas precisely because he knew Melissa would feel pressure to find someone stronger to carry things.
Gary saw that pressure.
Then slowly turned being needed into control.
Again: explanation.
Not excuse.
Melissa looked at Brooke.
“I thought keeping the house, keeping a father figure for Ethan, keeping everything looking normal…”
Her voice broke.
“I thought that was protecting you.”
Brooke answered quietly.
“We didn’t need normal.”
Melissa looked down.
“We needed you.”
That was the moment the power inside the family finally shifted.
Not when Thomas arrived.
Not when the bank froze money.
When Melissa stopped defending the story she had been telling herself.
