Chapter 1 - The Man Gary Never Expected

Gary snapped the leather belt against the kitchen table so hard Ethan dropped his yellow crayon.
“Pick up the glass.”
The nine-year-old stayed pressed against the lower cabinets, staring at the shards beside a puddle of water.
“It was an accident,” Ethan whispered.
Gary raised the belt again.
Brooke hit him before he could bring it down.
She came through the doorway at a run, drove her foot into his side, and knocked him away from her little brother.
“Stay away from him!”
The wooden chair Gary had been holding crashed against the wall.
Brooke immediately put herself between Ethan and Gary.
Behind them, their mother stood in the doorway.
Melissa Carter didn’t scream.
She didn’t rush toward Ethan.
She didn’t tell Gary to stop.
She simply watched.
That frightened Brooke almost as much as the belt.
Gary straightened.
His face darkened.
“You think you’re tough now?”
He lifted the belt.
Ethan grabbed the back of Brooke’s shirt.
“I’m scared. Stop it!”
Brooke widened her stance.
Gary stepped toward them.
“I’m going to teach this brat a lesson.”
“Don’t you dare touch my brother.”
Brooke shoved him backward.
Gary caught himself against the table.
For one second, Brooke thought her mother might finally move.
Instead Melissa said quietly, “Brooke, stop making this worse.”
Brooke stared at her.
“Me?”
Gary grabbed Brooke’s jacket.
Then the phone on the kitchen table began vibrating.
Everyone looked at it.
Brooke saw the number.
She recognized it because she had written it on the inside of her wrist less than an hour earlier.
Gary saw it too.
The anger left his face.
Melissa went pale.
Brooke tore herself free and answered.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice said, “I’m outside.”
Three hard knocks struck the front door.
Gary looked at Melissa.
“You called him?”
Melissa whispered, “I didn’t.”
The doorknob turned.
A tall man in a dark work coat appeared in the hallway.
He was in his late forties, broad-shouldered, rain still shining on his hair.
Brooke had seen his face only once before.
In an old photograph hidden inside a metal box beneath the basement stairs.
He looked at Gary.
Then at the belt.
Then at Ethan trembling behind Brooke.
His expression changed.
“Stay away from the kids.”
Gary didn’t move.
Neither did Melissa.
The man stepped into the kitchen.
“My name is Thomas Hale,” he said to Brooke.
“I was your father’s best friend.”
Brooke’s heart pounded.
Gary lowered the belt.
Thomas looked directly at Melissa.
“And unless you want to explain everything in front of Ethan, I suggest you tell me why you’ve spent three years making these children believe I abandoned them.”
Melissa’s lips parted.
Brooke slowly turned toward her mother.
May you like
Because that was the first moment she understood the man at the door wasn’t the surprise.
Her mother’s fear of him was.
