Chapter 8 - The Decision That Put Margaret at Risk

Victor refused to explain.

He wanted to meet privately.

Ryan refused.

“If you have something to say, say it with attorneys present.”

Victor hung up.

An hour later, Derek called.

His voice lacked Victor’s confidence.

“I don’t want any part of this anymore.”

Ryan almost laughed.

“You were passing my son between moving cars.”

“I know.”

“No, Derek. You don’t get to become reasonable now because things got serious.”

Derek went silent.

Then said, “Victor told me your mother would bury it.”

That sentence mattered.

“Why?”

“Because she always does.”

Ryan documented the call.

The next morning, on advice of counsel, he notified the estate’s insurer that historical information connected to the gate claim might have been inaccurate.

He also provided the appropriate authorities with what he knew about the old incident rather than trying to investigate criminal questions himself.

There were no instant arrests.

No dramatic raid.

Just calls.

Statements.

Records.

Questions.

Exactly the kind of slow consequences Margaret had been trying to avoid.

Ryan also cooperated fully regarding the recent incident involving Noah.

Victor insisted the baby had never been released and had never been in actual danger.

Ryan did not exaggerate what he saw.

He described it exactly.

Two fast-moving cars.

Adults leaning between them.

A crying infant being transferred across the gap.

That was enough.

The investigation into the current event developed separately from the old gate incident.

Margaret called Ryan that evening.

“You reported the insurance claim.”

“Yes.”

“You could have spoken to me first.”

“I did.”

Margaret was quiet.

“Do you understand what could happen?”

“Yes.”

“To me?”

“Yes.”

Her voice cracked.

Ryan almost softened.

Then he remembered Hannah’s question.

Why had Margaret allowed Victor near Noah?

“Mom, you had nine months to fix this.”

“I was scared.”

“So was Noah.”

Margaret began crying.

Ryan closed his eyes.

He still loved her.

That was what made boundaries painful.

If he hated her, this would have been easier.

“I’m not doing this to punish you,” he said.

“It feels like punishment.”

“It’s accountability.”

She gave a broken laugh.

“That sounds like something Hannah would say.”

“No.”

Ryan looked toward his sleeping son.

“It sounds like something I should’ve learned sooner.”

Three days later, Victor’s attorney contacted Ryan’s.

Victor claimed there was another reason Margaret paid him.

And he was willing to reveal it only if Ryan agreed to stop cooperating in the investigation concerning Noah.

Ryan read the message once.

Then told his attorney:

“No deal.”
