Chapter 10 - What Margaret Took From Ryan’s Desk

Margaret asked to tell Ryan in person.

They met at Caroline’s hotel, with Caroline present.

Margaret brought no papers.

No dramatic envelope.

She simply sat down and said:

“I went into your office.”

Ryan waited.

“Why?”

“The hospital called your house line first.”

That part made sense.

Nine months earlier, Ryan and Hannah had rushed to the hospital so quickly that Ryan left his work laptop open in the home office.

Margaret had come to the estate to collect a hospital bag Ryan forgot.

She heard the landline.

Then she went into his office.

“What did you take?”

Margaret looked at Caroline.

Then Ryan.

“A loan proposal.”

Ryan frowned.

He remembered it.

A proposal to borrow against his personal investment account to put additional money into Bennett Outdoor Holdings, a struggling family-owned recreational-property business he had been considering leaving.

Margaret had hated that idea.

Not because she wanted Ryan to borrow.

Because she feared he would discover how weak one of the company divisions had become.

“I took the proposal because I didn’t want you signing anything while Noah was being born.”

Ryan stared at her.

“That almost sounds reasonable.”

“It wasn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t throw it away.”

She gave it to Victor.

Victor was supposed to take it to Margaret’s office so Ryan wouldn’t see it until she could explain.

Instead, Victor opened it.

Inside the proposal were financial summaries showing Margaret had quietly injected nearly $600,000 of her own retirement savings into the family business over three years.

Caroline whispered, “You did what?”

Margaret began crying.

She had been keeping a failing division alive with personal money because she could not bear admitting that a business founded by her husband—Ryan and Caroline’s late father—was no longer sustainable.

That was the real secret Victor discovered.

Not Noah’s paternity.

Not a hidden crime involving the baby.

Margaret’s financial desperation.

Victor realized she was terrified Ryan would learn she had been sacrificing her retirement to preserve his father’s legacy.

Then, hours later, Margaret crashed the SUV.

Victor suddenly had two pieces of leverage.

The hidden financial papers.

And the accident.

That was why the payment became forty thousand dollars.

That was why he could keep coming back.

That was why Margaret tolerated behavior she would never have tolerated from anyone else.

The three clues finally fit.

Victor’s absolute confidence around the estate.

Margaret’s panic whenever Ryan tried to exclude him.

The mysterious payment on the night Noah was born.

Victor had not possessed one secret.

He had possessed the shame Margaret built her identity around.

She had spent years presenting herself as the woman who held the Bennett family together.

In reality, she had been quietly draining herself to prevent them from seeing that part of the family legacy was already failing.

Ryan looked at his mother.

“You weren’t protecting Noah.”

“No.”

“You weren’t even protecting me.”

May you like

Margaret shook her head.

“I was protecting the version of myself I wanted you to believe.”
