Chapter 9 - THE CHAIN DID NOT START IN THE BASEMENT
Wyatt initially told police Sabrina chained him after he fell.
That was true.
It was incomplete.
The fuller account came out slowly.
Three days before New Year’s Eve, Wyatt confronted her about the Redfern transaction.
Sabrina denied hiding anything.
Wyatt said he would call Blackridge directly.
She grabbed his phone.
He grabbed it back.
She shoved him near the basement stairs.
Wyatt fell.
His knee struck the landing badly.
Sabrina panicked.
For several minutes she helped him.
Ice.
Pillow.
Pain medication.
Then Wyatt asked her to call an ambulance.
She refused.
“If you go to the hospital, they’ll ask questions.”
Wyatt stared at her.
“What questions?”
“You’ll make this sound like I pushed you.”
“You did.”
That changed everything.
Sabrina took his phone.
Locked the basement door.
For the first night, Wyatt was not chained.
He could not climb the stairs on his injured knee.
The second day, he managed to pull himself upward using the railing.
Sabrina found him halfway.
She pushed him back.
Then installed the chain using hardware already stored in the basement workshop.
By the third day, she began bringing documents.
Sign the Redfern transfer.
Sign the voting consent.
Sign the resignation from Mercer management.
Wyatt refused.
Sabrina stopped bringing full meals.
Then New Year’s Eve arrived.
Guests were useful.
She believed Wyatt would stay silent if other people were upstairs.
Embarrassment had controlled him before.
Why not again?
The chain was physical.
But the basement had started months earlier.
Every relationship isolated.
Every objection explained away.
Every communication filtered.
Every fear of appearing unstable used against him.
Abraham’s recording did not uncover the whole story.
It captured the moment the invisible structure became visible.
That was why Sabrina wanted the phone so badly.
