Chapter 4 - THE STORY SABRINA BUILT

Wyatt had been under enormous pressure for six months.

That part was real.

Mercer Industrial lost one major customer.

Fuel costs increased.

A warehouse roof needed replacement.

Then Blackridge approached.

Wyatt became obsessed with the decision.

Sell the family business?

Keep it?

Take millions and walk away?

Protect the employees?

Protect the name?

Sabrina helped.

At first.

She prepared models.

Called advisers.

Organized dinners with potential buyers.

Then her language changed.

“You’re spiraling.”

“You’re too emotional about this.”

“You need me to handle the negotiations.”

Wyatt started sleeping badly.

Sabrina told their friends he was having “episodes.”

When he missed a board meeting because his knee had begun bothering him after a skiing accident, she told the board he was “not functioning normally.”

Wyatt confronted her.

She cried.

Then said he was frightening her.

That became the pattern.

Wyatt raised his voice.

Sabrina documented anger.

Wyatt questioned a transaction.

Sabrina described paranoia.

Wyatt refused to sign.

Sabrina told advisers he was “frozen by family trauma.”

And Wyatt made the mistake abusive families often train people to make.

He became more emotional as people stopped believing him.

Which made Sabrina’s description look more accurate.

“Why didn’t you call me?” Abraham asked.

They were still in the hospital.

Wyatt laughed bitterly.

“You think you would’ve believed me?”

“Yes.”

“No, Dad.”

Abraham went quiet.

Wyatt looked at him.

“You spent my whole life telling me Mercer makes people crazy.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“You told me Grandpa became abusive because of this company. You told me Grandma became anxious because of the money. You told me Mom left partly because I was obsessed with pleasing Harold.”

Abraham closed his eyes.

Wyatt continued.

“If I called and said my wife was telling people the company was making me unstable, what would you have thought?”

Abraham knew.

That the pattern had finally reached Wyatt.

Not that Sabrina was manufacturing it.

He lowered his head.

“You’re right.”

Wyatt looked surprised.

Abraham continued.

“I might not have believed you fast enough.”

That was why Wyatt texted:

Don’t come.

It’s dangerous.

He was not only protecting Abraham from Sabrina.

He was protecting himself from one more person looking at him and seeing the troubled Mercer man everyone expected.
