Chapter 1 - THE CHILD WITH THE WHEELBARROW

Rachel Lawson heard Megan before she saw the child.
“Get that filthy thing out,” Megan snapped from the front of the ER lobby. “This isn’t a shelter.”
Rachel looked up from the intake desk and saw a rusty wheelbarrow shuddering across the tile. A little girl no older than seven was pushing it with both hands, barefoot and shaking, her dirty brown hair stuck to her cheeks. Inside the wheelbarrow, under a faded yellow blanket, two newborn babies twitched weakly.
Megan shoved the cart back, and the girl stumbled with it.
“Please,” the child rasped. “My mommy has been sleeping for three days.”
Rachel was already moving. She caught the handle before the wheelbarrow tipped and pulled back the blanket. Two tiny babies, both underdressed for the cold, both frighteningly still for newborns. One let out a thin cry. The other barely moved.
“Call neonatal now,” Rachel said, her voice cutting through the lobby.
A trauma tech rushed forward. Rachel checked the babies’ color, then the girl’s blistered palms. The skin had peeled raw in places.
“What’s your name?” Rachel asked.
“Lily.”
“Lily, I’m Rachel. We’re going to help them.”
Lily yanked the wheelbarrow closer to her body with surprising force. “Promise you won’t send me back.”
Rachel glanced at Megan, who looked away first.
“Back where?”
Lily’s eyes darted toward the sliding doors as if someone might appear there. She lowered her voice.
“To Grandma Donna’s place. She said if I brought anybody home, she’d take the babies somewhere I couldn’t find them.”
Rachel signaled for security, not because Lily was dangerous but because now the danger had a direction.

As staff lifted the twins from the wheelbarrow, Lily clung to the yellow blanket and whispered one more thing—so soft Rachel almost missed it.
“Mommy told Grandma she wouldn’t sign the blue papers.”
