Chapter 12 - WHAT DENNIS WAS ACTUALLY AFRAID OF LOSING

The emotional confrontation occurred at a court-ordered family meeting.

Sophie was not there.

Elmer, Dennis, Trisha, Leah and Barbara sat around one table with attorneys and a mediator nearby.

Dennis looked at Leah first.

“You left.”

Leah answered:

“I went to treatment.”

“You disappeared for years.”

“I wrote.”

“You could have come to court.”

“I tried.”

“You missed deadlines.”

“Yes.”

That answer disrupted him.

Leah did not pretend she had done everything perfectly.

“I was sick. I was broke. I was ashamed. And every person I trusted told me Sophie was better without me.”

Dennis turned toward Barbara.

“You agreed.”

Barbara nodded.

“I did.”

He looked at Trisha.

“You raised her.”

“I did.”

“So everybody benefited until now.”

Elmer leaned forward.

“Sophie didn’t.”

Dennis stared at him.

“You think you can raise her better than me?”

“No.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

“Because I can keep her safe today.”

The mediator asked Dennis what he feared most.

He gave several answers.

Prison.

Losing his business.

Leah taking Sophie.

Trisha divorcing him.

Finally the mediator asked again:

“What is underneath all of that?”

Dennis stopped.

When he spoke, his voice was quieter.

“If Sophie knows what I did, she won’t love me.”

Elmer felt anger rise.

Then grief.

That fear explained something important.

Dennis had not locked Sophie away because he did not care whether she loved him.

He locked her away because he believed controlling what she knew was the only way to guarantee it.

The same pattern had governed everything.

Leah’s name.

Trisha’s marriage.

Barbara’s silence.

The fake Jenna story.

The returned letters.

Love had become a result Dennis believed he could engineer by limiting information.

Trisha said:

“You never let any of us choose you with the truth.”

Dennis looked at her.

She removed her wedding ring.

Not dramatically.

She placed it in her purse.

“I don’t know whether I would’ve married you if I knew about Leah.”

Dennis’s eyes filled.

“That’s why I couldn’t tell you.”

“No. That’s why you had to.”

Leah asked only one question.

“Why lock Sophie?”

Dennis looked down.

“She said she was going to show Trisha the certificate.”

“So?”

“I needed one weekend to figure out what to say.”

Elmer’s voice hardened.

“You bought yourself a weekend with three days of a child’s terror.”

May you like

Dennis closed his eyes.

There was no explanation left after that.
