Chapter 2 - The Secret They Had Made a Child Carry

Bernadette did not argue about paternity.

She took out her phone and called 911.

That was the moment Colby finally looked frightened.

He told her she was destroying the family. Shana insisted Milo had been “out of control.” Neither explanation survived the sight of the red mark on Milo's cheek or the leather strap still lying beside the sofa.

By early evening, a Brookfield police officer had photographed the room and a county child-protective-services worker had spoken to Milo privately at a pediatric emergency department.

Bernadette waited in the hall.

When the caseworker came out, her face was professional but tight.

Milo would not be returning home that night.

Because Bernadette had no history that disqualified her and Milo asked repeatedly to stay with her, emergency kinship placement was approved pending further review.

Colby was furious.

Shana said almost nothing.

At Bernadette's condo that night, Milo refused the guest room and slept on the couch where he could see the front door.

Around two in the morning, Bernadette woke to find him sitting upright beneath a blanket.

“Grandma?”

She sat beside him.

“I'm here.”

He picked at a loose thread.

“Dad didn't start getting really mad until Mom took me to see the man.”

“What man?”

Milo looked instantly guilty.

“I'm not supposed to say.”

Bernadette felt sick.

“Milo, nobody gets to hurt you for telling the truth.”

He swallowed.

“Mom said he was just helping because of my heart.”

Bernadette knew Milo had been seeing a pediatric cardiologist after fainting during soccer practice three months earlier.

“What was his name?”

Milo shook his head.

Then he whispered, “Mom told me Dad could never know we met him.”

The answer made Colby's accusation in the family room sound suddenly less like suspicion.
