Chapter 8 - Sophie Makes the Separation Real

The apartment in Cranford had beige walls, cheap cabinet hardware, and no memories.

Sophie loved it for exactly that reason.

She moved in on a Saturday.

Maya helped carry boxes.

Daniel offered.

Sophie said no.

She removed half her clothes from the Westfield house while Daniel was at work and Vanessa was nowhere near the property.

Their house was jointly owned.

Sophie did not surrender her legal rights.

She simply chose not to live there while deciding whether the marriage had anything honest left inside it.

She retained a family-law attorney named Rebecca Stein.

Not to file for divorce immediately.

To understand what separation meant.

Mortgage.

Joint accounts.

Health insurance.

Property.

What Sophie should document.

What she should not impulsively do because she was furious.

Rebecca also reviewed the physical confrontation.

“You were kicked first.”

“Yes.”

“Then you slapped her three times.”

“Yes.”

“Did she continue attacking between the slaps?”

“She was coming toward me when I started. After the third, I stopped.”

“Good that you stopped.”

Sophie nodded.

“I’m not proud of it.”

“You don’t need to perform remorse for me. Just tell the truth.”

That became Sophie’s rule.

No polishing.

No rewriting herself as the flawless victim.

Vanessa had assaulted her.

Sophie had retaliated physically.

Daniel had invaded her privacy.

Vanessa had manipulated that access.

All could be true simultaneously.

Sophie sent Vanessa a written notice through Rebecca requesting no direct contact.

Vanessa ignored it within four hours.

You hit me three times and now you’re hiding behind a lawyer?

Sophie did not respond.

Another arrived.

Daniel is falling apart because of you.

Then:

You always wanted to isolate him.

Sophie blocked the number.

That evening Daniel came by the apartment.

He did not ask to enter.

“I started therapy.”

Sophie leaned against the doorframe.

“Okay.”

“I told Vanessa I need space.”

“Okay.”

“She said you made me.”

Sophie almost smiled.

“Of course.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I’m starting to understand how often she tells me what my feelings mean.”

“That’s work you have to do without me.”

“I know.”

He looked past Sophie into the apartment.

Boxes everywhere.

Her wedding photograph was not visible.

“Are you filing?”

“Not today.”

Hope appeared so quickly in his face that Sophie regretted the wording.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

“Not filing today is not the same as promising not to.”

He nodded.

The hope became something quieter.

“I understand.”

Sophie watched him walk back to his car.

Signing the lease had done something the confrontation never could.

Daniel finally understood that Sophie could love him and still leave.

Vanessa understood something too.

For the first time, threatening Sophie’s place in the family no longer frightened her.

Sophie had already stepped outside it herself.
