Chapter 1 - The Password Daniel Never Told Her About

Vanessa’s foot drove into Sophie’s lower stomach before Sophie had time to move.
The impact knocked her backward into the side of the sofa.
For half a second, Sophie stayed bent against the armrest, one hand gripping the upholstery while she fought for breath.
Vanessa stood over her.
“You forged your way into this family. Now get out.”
Sophie slowly straightened.
Six weeks of accusations, whispers, screenshots, and Daniel looking at her like she had become someone he no longer recognized burned through whatever fear she still had.
“You’re the one who faked those messages to turn Daniel against me.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Just once.
A tiny break in the confidence.
Sophie saw it.
So did Vanessa.
Then Vanessa lunged again.
This time Sophie stepped forward.
One open palm struck Vanessa’s cheek.
Then another.
Then a third.
Three fast slaps.
Sophie stopped immediately.
Vanessa stumbled against the coffee table and stared at her, stunned.
“You don’t get to ruin my marriage and hit me too.”
Footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Daniel appeared in the doorway.
“What the hell is going on?”
His navy shirt was still untucked from work. His car keys hung from one hand.
Sophie pointed at Vanessa.
“She made those fake messages look like they came from me.”
Daniel froze.
Vanessa looked at him.
Something changed in her face.
The fear disappeared.
A faint smile replaced it.
Sophie saw that too.
“Daniel?”
Vanessa calmly touched her burning cheek.
“Go ahead,” Sophie said. “Tell him.”
Vanessa looked at Sophie.
Then at her brother.
“Then ask your husband why he gave me your password.”
The entire room seemed to contract around the sentence.
Sophie slowly turned toward Daniel.
He did not deny it.
He did something worse.
He looked at the floor.
Her anger disappeared so quickly it frightened her.
“What password?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Sophie—”
“What password?”
“The email account.”
Her mouth went dry.
The account contained years of personal messages.
Job negotiations.
Therapy appointment confirmations.
Private conversations with friends.
Drafts she had never sent.
Even notes she had emailed herself during the worst months of her marriage.
Sophie looked at Vanessa.
“You were inside my email?”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Ask Daniel.”
Sophie turned back.
“When?”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“About five months ago.”
Five months.
The fake messages had appeared six weeks ago.
The timeline hit her before the reason did.
“You gave her access months before those screenshots showed up?”
“I can explain.”
Vanessa gave a soft, satisfied laugh.
Sophie stared at Daniel.
“No.”
Her voice was surprisingly calm.
“You can explain one thing.”
She took her phone from the coffee table.
“Did Vanessa guess my password?”
Daniel said nothing.
“Did she steal it from your phone?”
Nothing.
“Or did you deliberately give it to her?”
Daniel’s face answered first.
Then his voice did.
“I gave it to her.”
Sophie nodded once.
Vanessa’s smile widened.
She thought she had won.
May you like
But Sophie was no longer looking at her.
Because suddenly the person she was most afraid had betrayed her wasn’t Daniel’s sister.
