Chapter 14 - The Last Version Amber Tried to Save
The final pretrial conference took place almost seven months after Liberty Oak Park.
Amber looked smaller than Sarah remembered.
Her house had been sold to address debts connected to Mark’s failed business. Walter had revoked her inheritance privileges except for whatever remained legally required under his estate plan. Lily lived primarily with Mark’s sister while family court reviewed both parents.
Mark had pleaded guilty to financial fraud and agreed to restitution.
Daniel had been formally reprimanded by his employer but kept his job after disclosing the old finder’s-fee arrangement.
Caleb still carried sealed juice boxes to school.
The prosecutor placed the final offer before Amber.
It required her to admit that she intentionally gave Caleb medication not prescribed to him in order to make him sleepy and undermine what he had witnessed.
It also required admissions related to exploiting Walter and falsifying care expenses.
Amber read the paragraph about Caleb three times.
“I didn’t mean for him to nearly die.”
Sarah sat across from her.
“Nobody is asking you to say you did.”
“They’re calling it intentional.”
“You intentionally put it in his drink.”
“To calm him down.”
“To silence him.”
Amber looked toward her attorney.
Then at Sarah.
“If I sign this, Lily will read it someday.”
“Yes.”
“She’ll think I’m a monster.”
Sarah thought about Caleb on the grass and Lily screaming into the phone.
“She’ll know what you did.”
“That’s the same thing to a child.”
“No. It isn’t.”
Amber looked confused.
Sarah continued.
“A monster can’t change. A person has to decide whether to.”
Amber’s eyes filled.
She had spent months blaming Mark’s debts, Walter’s stubbornness, Daniel’s old deal, Sarah’s hostility, and Caleb’s accusations.
All of those things had shaped what happened.
None had poured the drink.
Amber picked up the pen.
Her hand hovered over the signature line.
Then she signed.
