Chapter 10 - What Daniel Had Forgotten to Tell His Wife
Sarah stared at the email until the letters stopped looking like letters.
D.B.
Daniel sat across from Detective Holloway in the conference room.
“That isn’t me.”
The detective slid another document forward.
Three years earlier, Daniel had introduced Mark to the development group through his pharmaceutical-sales network. One of Daniel’s former college roommates worked for the group’s investment division.
The commercial building Walter owned sat on land the developers wanted for a mixed-use project.
Daniel had helped arrange the first meeting.
“I did that,” he admitted. “Dad wanted to hear offers.”
The detective pointed to the 12%.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Years earlier, before Amber took control of Walter’s finances, Daniel had negotiated a finder’s fee if the property sold.
He never received the money because Walter rejected the offer.
He never told Sarah.
“Why hide it?” she asked afterward.
“Because you hated that I kept doing side deals.”
“You mean deals that put family relationships into your commission structure.”
“I thought Dad wanted to sell.”
“But Amber knew about the fee.”
“Yes.”
That reinterpreted three earlier clues at once.
Amber knew Daniel would be reluctant to challenge the property sale because he once stood to profit from it.
She knew his signature supporting Walter’s incompetence would look worse if the old commission arrangement surfaced.
And she knew Sarah would question Daniel’s motives if the truth came out.
Amber had not manipulated the family only through medication.
She had built a network of compromised people.
Mark wanted the development commission.
Daniel had wanted a finder’s fee.
Amber wanted control of Walter’s assets.
Everyone had something embarrassing enough to keep quiet.
Except Caleb and Lily.
Children had seen the pattern without understanding the incentives.
That was why Amber needed Caleb discredited.
She had not intended to kill him.
Investigators believed she intended to make him drowsy and confused so his story about Walter would sound unreliable.
Instead, a child’s body reacted far more severely than she expected.
Sarah listened to Holloway explain it and felt no relief.
An unintended coma could still begin with an intentional act.
Daniel reached for her hand.
She moved hers away.
“You knew Amber could use that deal against you.”
“I didn’t know she was drugging Dad.”
“But you knew enough to avoid looking closely.”
He had no answer.
The major twist was not that Daniel helped Amber.
It was worse in a quieter way.
