Chapter 14 - THE LAST THING CLAIRE WOULD PAY FOR

Claire called Brandon.

He answered on the second ring.

“What did you tell Halcyon about Mom?”

Silence.

Then:

“I was trying to correct the property issue.”

“By offering her assets?”

“I said she had historically supported Greenline.”

“That is not the same thing as agreeing to support this financing.”

“I was going to talk to her.”

“You submitted it before talking to her.”

He exhaled.

“Claire, I was cornered.”

“No. You were exposed.”

He hung up.

An hour later he returned to the house.

Not angry.

Defeated.

He stood in the kitchen where their mother had made him pancakes as a child, borrowed him money as an adult, and lied to protect him long after she should have stopped.

Evelyn placed the revised disclosure on the table.

“Did you submit this?”

“Yes.”

“Did you intend to ask me to pledge my retirement account?”

“I was going to ask whether you’d consider—”

“No.”

Brandon stopped.

Evelyn repeated it.

“No.”

Claire watched her mother.

The word seemed difficult.

Maybe because she should have said it six years earlier.

Brandon sat.

“If Greenline folds, I may lose everything.”

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.”

“The warehouse.”

“Yes.”

“My equipment.”

“Yes.”

“Possibly the condo if the business guarantees hit hard enough.”

Vanessa stood near the doorway.

She and Brandon had barely spoken since the previous night.

Evelyn looked at her son.

“You may lose things.”

His eyes filled.

She continued.

“But you’re not losing them because I finally said no.”

Brandon looked down.

“You’re losing them because you spent years borrowing tomorrow to protect yesterday.”

Claire felt the temptation then.

She could fix part of it.

Her company had enough cash reserves to stabilize Greenline temporarily.

She could buy equipment at market value.

She could purchase one of Brandon’s receivables.

She could become the rescuer again.

Brandon knew it too.

He looked at her.

“You could help.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

There it was.

The final family habit.

He failed.

Evelyn sacrificed.

Claire repaired.

And everyone called that love.

“I could,” Claire said.

Hope appeared on his face.

“I’m not going to.”

Brandon looked away.

Claire sat across from him.

“I’ll pay for independent financial counseling for Mom because your debt affected her. I’ll pay for a mediator if she wants one. I’ll help your employees connect with companies I know if Greenline closes.”

“What about me?”

“You get to solve your own life.”

His jaw trembled.

Claire expected anger.

Instead he nodded.

Vanessa quietly removed her wedding ring.

Brandon noticed.

“Are you leaving me?”

“I’m leaving the version of our marriage where I don’t know what’s real.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one I have.”

By seven that evening, Halcyon confirmed in writing that the proposal was closed.

Brandon’s final revised disclosure had become part of the compliance file.

He could no longer quietly rewrite the story.

The investors knew.

His wife knew.

His mother knew.

May you like

His sister knew.

And the only thing left was deciding what each of them would do now that nobody was willing to protect his reputation for him.
