Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON HER KNEES

The first thing Claire Morgan saw when she rolled her suitcase through the side gate of her Buckhead house was her sixty-six-year-old mother on her hands and knees.
Evelyn was scrubbing the limestone patio with a white brush.
Her beige blouse was soaked through at the shoulders. Dirty water had darkened both knees of her pants. A blue bucket sat beside her with two cleaning bottles lined up like she had been given instructions.
Vanessa stood over her.
One hand was buried in Evelyn’s silver-gray hair.
“Scrub faster, maid.”
Claire stopped so abruptly that her suitcase tipped against her calf.
For half a second, nobody noticed her.
Then Evelyn looked toward the gate.
Her expression wasn’t relief.
It was fear.
“Mom?”
Vanessa turned.
Brandon, Claire’s forty-year-old brother, was standing inside the open double doors with his arms crossed.
He had been watching.
That hurt Claire almost more than what happened next.
Evelyn’s brush slowed.
Vanessa jerked her head backward.
“I told you not to stop.”
The slap cracked across the patio.
Evelyn caught herself with one palm before her cheek hit the stone.
Claire dropped her suitcase.
“Get your hand off my mother.”
Vanessa stared at her, startled for one beat, then recovered with a little laugh.
“Oh. You’re back.”
Claire crossed the patio.
Vanessa reached again for Evelyn.
Claire caught her wrist.
Hard.
She peeled Vanessa’s fingers out of Evelyn’s hair and pulled her mother upright behind her.
“Touch her again.”
Vanessa’s confidence flickered.
Brandon finally moved.
“Claire, don’t make this bigger than it is.”
Claire turned toward him.
“You stood there.”
“Mom agreed to help.”
“Help?”
Evelyn grabbed Claire’s sleeve.
“Claire. Please.”
Again, not relief.
Fear.
Claire looked at the raw skin across her mother’s knuckles.
Then at Vanessa.
“Why did you call her the maid?”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Because that’s basically what she is around here.”
Brandon’s jaw tightened.
“Vanessa.”
“What?” She looked genuinely irritated with him. “You’re the one who explained the arrangement.”
Claire slowly faced her brother.
“What arrangement?”
Vanessa glanced between them.
Then smiled.
“The arrangement where your mother lives here because Brandon lets her.”
Claire said nothing.
Vanessa mistook that for defeat.
“This is our house, Claire. Brandon’s house. So before you come storming in from another one of your little business trips acting like you run everything—”
Claire reached into the outside pocket of her leather work bag.
She took out the folded property packet she had picked up from her attorney’s office on the drive from Hartsfield-Jackson.
Then she lifted the brass front-door keys.
Brandon’s face changed.
Claire noticed.
Vanessa didn’t.
“You own nothing here,” Brandon said quickly.
Too quickly.
Claire opened the first page enough for him to see the Fulton County parcel number.
Vanessa stopped smiling.
Evelyn whispered, “Claire, don’t.”
Claire looked back at her.
That was the moment she understood something was worse than the slap.

Her mother wasn’t afraid Claire would lose the house.
She was afraid Claire would prove she owned it.
