Chapter 8 - DANIEL MADE A DECISION HE COULDN’T TAKE BACK

Rachel refused to explain the second secret that day.

Daniel stopped pressing.

Instead, he acted on what he already knew.

He arranged to work remotely for two weeks.

He and Noah moved back into the family home.

Rachel temporarily stayed with her sister in Hilliard.

It was not a custody ruling.

It was an agreement between two parents who could no longer live together without turning every dinner into an interrogation.

Rachel could see Noah regularly.

For the moment, they agreed neither would leave him alone with Frank.

Frank responded badly.

He drove to Daniel’s house.

Daniel did not let him inside.

“You can’t keep my grandson from me.”

“I’m not.”

“You just said I can’t watch him.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“I raised you.”

“And I’m raising him.”

Frank pointed at the house.

“Your mother would be ashamed of this.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Don’t use Mom.”

Frank stopped.

Daniel continued.

“You were drinking while Noah was in your house.”

“I fell asleep.”

“He couldn’t wake you.”

“I was tired.”

“You had whiskey beside you.”

“One drink.”

“You keep changing the number.”

Frank’s jaw tightened.

Daniel said, “You can see Noah when I’m there.”

“I don’t need supervision.”

“Then don’t come.”

It was the first boundary Daniel had ever given his father without negotiating afterward.

Frank walked away.

That evening Rachel called Noah.

She did not ask questions about Daniel.

She did not tell Noah she was being punished.

The family counselor had advised both parents to keep adult conflict away from him.

Rachel was trying.

After the call, Noah handed Daniel his tablet.

“I made something.”

It was a birthday-video folder.

Most clips were silly.

Noah interviewing relatives.

Balloons.

Cake before it was destroyed.

Frank pretending not to know how the camera worked.

Then one clip showed Claire arriving early.

Her crutch visible beside the table.

Noah had left the tablet recording while he went upstairs.

The adults continued talking off camera.

Rachel:

“Claire knows about Friday.”

Frank:

“So?”

Rachel:

“She knows about the other time too.”

Frank:

“What other time?”

Rachel said something too quietly for the tablet to capture.

Then Frank answered:

“You did what?”

Daniel stopped the video.

He replayed it.

Same result.

Rachel had said something Frank apparently had not known.

The “other time” was not another evening with Grandpa.

Daniel called Claire.

“What else happened to Noah?”

Claire went quiet.

May you like

Then said:

“Come over.”
