Chapter 1 - THE BIRTHDAY CAKE ON HER DRESS

Rachel Bennett’s hands hit Claire between the shoulder blades before Claire could turn around.

The shove sent her sideways.

Her metal crutch slipped across the hardwood, her injured leg buckled, and her hip crashed into the folding dessert table.

Eight-year-old Noah’s pink birthday cake slid off its stand and collapsed across the front of Claire’s floral dress.

“You ruin everything!” Rachel shouted. “Now look what you did to my son’s birthday!”

Claire grabbed the table edge before she went completely down.

For several seconds she could only breathe through the pain shooting from her healing knee into her thigh.

Children stopped talking.

Two relatives backed toward the hallway.

Noah stood beneath a cluster of blue balloons, still wearing his paper birthday crown, clutching his tablet against his chest.

He looked terrified.

“Mom,” he whispered.

Rachel pointed at Claire instead.

“See what she does? She comes into our family and destroys everything.”

“Our family?”

Claire reached for her crutch.

“Rachel, I’m Daniel’s sister.”

Frank Bennett came through the living-room doorway.

Claire expected her father to help her stand.

Instead, he grabbed the crutch.

“Dad.”

Frank yanked it out of her hands.

“You’ve caused enough.”

Claire dropped to one knee.

“What are you doing?”

“Apologize.”

“For being pushed?”

“For bringing this into Noah’s birthday!”

He raised the crutch.

Claire saw the movement before she understood it.

The metal shaft came down hard against her upper shoulder.

Pain exploded down her arm.

“Dad!”

“Apologize, or I’ll teach you some respect myself.”

He lifted it again.

This time Claire caught the shaft with both hands.

They struggled over it.

Her injured leg shook beneath her.

Rachel stood above her.

No remorse.

Only panic.

That was what Claire noticed.

Not anger.

Panic.

Because this had never really been about the cake.

The front door opened.

Daniel walked in wearing his navy travel jacket, rolling suitcase still behind him.

He stopped.

His father held Claire’s crutch over her.

His wife stood beside the ruined birthday cake.

His sister was on one knee.

And his son was backed against the hallway wall.

Daniel crossed the room.

“Move away from my sister. Now.”

He ripped the crutch from Frank’s hands and threw it across the floor.

Frank stepped back.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.”

“Then make me.”

Rachel suddenly looked toward Noah.

More specifically, toward the tablet in his hands.

She moved.

Daniel blocked her.

“No.”

“Give me that tablet, Noah.”

Noah backed farther into the hallway.

Claire used the table to pull herself upright.

Cake frosting streaked her dress.

She looked at Daniel.

“She wasn’t scared of the cake.”

Rachel spun toward her.

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“She was scared I’d tell you about Noah.”

Rachel lunged.

Her hand covered Claire’s mouth.

Daniel caught her wrist and dragged it away.

Claire managed two words.

“She left him—”

From Noah’s tablet came Rachel’s recorded voice.

Faint.

But unmistakable.

“If Daniel finds out where I left him, I’m finished.”

Daniel looked at his wife.

Rachel went completely pale.

May you like

And Frank whispered something Claire had not expected.

“Turn that thing off.”
