Chapter 12 - The Dinner Nobody Wanted

Brian asked for the meeting.

Not at the villa.

At Claire’s conference room.

Neutral ground.

Brianna arrived with an attorney.

Paul arrived with another.

Megan and Jason sat beside me.

Brian sat alone.

No one touched the coffee.

Claire summarized the transfers.

Brianna interrupted.

“I know what the numbers say.”

Brian looked at her.

“Then say why.”

She stared at him.

“Because Northline was mine.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“For once, I had something that wasn’t Samuel’s company, Helen’s money, your name, your family.”

Her voice shook.

“I was tired of being the woman who married into everything.”

I understood that feeling more than I wanted to.

Then Brian asked, “So you stole from the same family you resented depending on?”

Brianna flinched.

Paul admitted he had approved accounting entries he knew were misleading.

He insisted Brianna believed sales would recover.

I asked Brianna one question.

“Why the rotten meat?”

Her face changed.

Not financial shame.

Personal shame.

“You kept looking at me like you knew.”

“I did know something was wrong.”

“You questioned everything.”

“That was my money.”

“You had everything.”

Her voice rose.

“Your husband adored you. Your sons call you first. The company still carries Samuel’s name. Even that house—everyone knows you helped buy it.”

Finally, there it was.

The money had created the crisis.

But the cruelty came from resentment.

Brianna had spent years measuring her life against mine.

And when she began failing, I became the safest person to punish.

Brian looked at her for a long time.

Then he said, “I could have forgiven you for failing.”

May you like

She covered her face.

“I don’t know if I can forgive what you did to her.”
