Chapter 11 - The Damage After Brian Believed Me

Brian moved out of the villa.
Not permanently.
Not yet.
He rented a furnished apartment near his office and told Brianna he needed separation while attorneys reviewed the financial exposure.
She blamed me.
Of course she did.
But Brian surprised us both.
“Mom didn’t make you transfer that money.”
Brianna cried.
“You think I wanted any of this?”
“No.”
Brian sounded tired.
“I think you wanted to fix your mistake so badly that everybody else became acceptable collateral.”
That included me.
It included him.
It included Paul.
Even Megan.
Megan carried guilt too.
“If I’d told Brian about that conversation with Brianna six months ago—”
I stopped her.
“About an affair he already knew about?”
“She said Paul still helped her.”
“That wasn’t enough to know this.”
Megan looked unconvinced.
Then I admitted my own mistake.
I had stayed quiet too long.
When Brianna first started belittling me, I had told myself she was stressed.
When things disappeared, I assumed I had misplaced them.
When she called me difficult, I tried harder to be easy.
I had been so afraid of becoming the mother-in-law everyone complained about that I made myself smaller inside a house I helped pay for.
That was my blind spot.
I did not cause Brianna’s abuse.
But I had helped hide it by minimizing my own pain.
The independent audit completed its preliminary findings.
Now truth had numbers attached to it.
May you like
But numbers alone did not decide what our family would do.
That required the conversation everyone had been avoiding.
