Chapter 5 - ASHLEY HAD BEEN USING NOAH’S NAME FOR MONTHS

The next truth came from their father.
Not willingly.
Michael Bennett showed up at Rachel’s house Tuesday evening carrying a grocery-store rotisserie chicken and the expression he wore whenever he intended to mediate something nobody had asked him to mediate.
“You and Ashley need to stop.”
Rachel remained on the porch.
“Stop what?”
“Punishing each other through the children.”
“I stopped paying for activities that were never my responsibility.”
“You offered.”
“I did.”
“Emma depends on that.”
“So did Ashley.”
Michael sighed.
“Rachel.”
She held up a hand.
“Did Ashley tell you about Noah’s accident settlement?”
His face changed.
Small.
Enough.
“How much did she say?”
“I don’t know.”
“Dad.”
“She said Noah had money put away.”
“Why were you discussing my seven-year-old’s money?”
Michael looked toward the yard.
“Because she was upset.”
“About what?”
“She said you were helping Noah financially and acting like Emma didn’t exist.”
Rachel laughed once.
“You mean paying my son’s medical bills?”
“She made it sound different.”
“How?”
Michael hesitated.
Rachel waited.
“Ashley said Mom intended everything to stay equal between the grandchildren.”
Rachel stared at him.
Their mother had left each grandchild a separate $10,000 education account.
Equal.
No ambiguity.
No discretionary family pool.
No connection to Noah’s accident settlement.
“Dad, did Ashley tell you Noah’s settlement came from Mom’s money?”
Michael’s silence answered.
Rachel stepped backward.
“She’s been telling people I took family money for Noah.”
“I didn’t say I believed her.”
“You called me to make me keep paying Emma.”
His expression tightened.
“I was trying to keep things balanced.”
“There’s nothing to balance.”
Michael’s voice rose.
“You have a good job. Ashley’s divorce nearly wiped her out.”
“She owns Mom’s house.”
“With a mortgage.”
“She bought my half below market because I wanted Emma to stay in her school district.”
Michael stopped.
Rachel continued.
“I’ve paid for dance, camp, clothes, ski club. What exactly is she paying for?”
“She’s your sister.”
Rachel almost laughed.
That answer had financed half her adult life.
Before leaving, Michael said something that mattered.
“Ashley told me you promised to use part of Noah’s settlement for Emma.”
Rachel stared at him.
“I never did.”
“I’m telling you what she said.”
“When?”
“Right after the accident.”
Right after.
Before Rachel had even received the settlement.
Ashley had been constructing the money story while Noah’s arm was still in a cast.
Rachel watched her father walk toward his car.
Then noticed a familiar envelope sticking from the folder under his arm.
The return address belonged to Carol Bennett’s former insurance agent.
Rachel called after him.
“What is that?”
Michael looked down.
“Ashley asked me to bring it.”
“Why?”
“It came to my house by mistake.”
Rachel held out her hand.
May you like
The envelope was addressed to her.
And it had already been opened.
