Chapter 14 - ASHLEY ASKED RACHEL FOR ONE LAST FAVOR

Eight months after the birthday party, Ashley’s financial situation became worse.

Her divorce was finalized.

The house was sold because she could not refinance it alone.

She moved into a smaller rental.

Emma changed schools.

None of those consequences came from Rachel canceling dance camp.

They came from a marriage ending, debt, legal costs, and decisions Ashley had delayed facing.

Then Ashley called.

Rachel almost did not answer.

She did.

“I need a favor.”

Rachel nearly laughed.

“What?”

“Not money.”

That surprised her.

Ashley asked whether Rachel would provide a written statement saying she did not believe Ashley intentionally hit Noah.

Rachel sat down.

“Why?”

“My attorney says intent matters.”

“I don’t believe you intentionally hit him.”

Ashley exhaled.

“But?”

Rachel looked toward Noah’s backpack by the door.

“I believe everything after the impact was intentional.”

Silence.

Ashley began crying.

“I know.”

Rachel continued.

“You drove away.”

“I came back.”

“You moved the car.”

“Yes.”

“You had Emma lie.”

“Yes.”

“You hid the report.”

“Yes.”

“You intercepted the insurance letter.”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

That admission was new.

Rachel closed her eyes.

Ashley had opened the letter when it first went to Michael’s house, then convinced him it was meaningless mail he should bring her.

Michael never knew.

Rachel said, “I’ll tell the truth if I’m asked.”

“Can’t you write the first part?”

“No.”

“Rachel.”

“You spent months cutting truth into pieces that protected you.”

Ashley stopped crying.

Rachel’s voice softened.

“I’m not doing that for you.”

Ashley whispered, “I’m scared.”

Rachel believed her.

“Then be scared and tell the truth anyway.”

They stayed on the phone another moment.

Neither spoke.

Before hanging up, Ashley said:

“Emma asks about you.”

Rachel’s chest tightened.

“I ask about her too.”

“Does she know?”

“No.”

Rachel looked toward the family calendar.

Noah’s eighth birthday was three weeks away.

Ashley asked:

“Will she ever be allowed at his birthday again?”

Rachel did not answer.

May you like

Because this time the answer did not belong only to her.

It belonged to Noah too.
