Chapter 12 - THE DINNER GERTRUDE COULDN’T CONTROL

Three months after surgery, Gertrude came to dinner.

Her first full evening back in Nicole and Brandon’s home.

Nicole made meatballs.

Brandon stared at the pan.

“You did that on purpose.”

Nicole smiled.

“Absolutely.”

Gertrude entered the kitchen and stopped.

For a moment, nobody knew whether to laugh.

Then Gertrude said:

“I suppose subtlety is dead.”

Nicole placed the serving dish on the table.

“It had a good run.”

Rosie climbed into her chair.

“Grandma, don’t throw them in the toilet.”

Brandon choked on his water.

Nicole covered her mouth.

Gertrude stared at Rosie.

Then did something none of them expected.

She laughed.

A tired laugh.

Almost embarrassed.

“I won’t.”

Dinner began.

Gertrude ate half of one meatball.

That was enough.

No one watched how much she ate after that.

Halfway through the meal, she put down her fork.

“I owe you an apology.”

Nicole looked up.

Gertrude did not turn to Brandon.

Good sign.

She spoke directly to Nicole.

“I treated you like an enemy because you noticed things.”

Nicole stayed silent.

“I called you controlling whenever you asked questions.”

“Yes.”

Gertrude almost smiled.

“You don’t make apologies easy.”

“I’m listening.”

Gertrude nodded.

“I threw your food away because eating made me uncomfortable, and I was afraid of why.”

She looked down.

“Insulting you was easier than admitting that.”

Nicole’s anger returned, quieter now.

“You humiliated me in front of my daughter.”

“I know.”

“You let Rosie watch her father defend you.”

Gertrude looked at Brandon.

He said nothing.

This apology was not his to rescue.

Gertrude returned her eyes to Nicole.

“I know.”

Nicole waited.

“I am sorry.”

No “but.”

No story about widowhood.

No mention of sacrifice.

Just the sentence.

Nicole breathed out.

“Thank you.”

Gertrude looked hopeful.

Nicole continued.

“That doesn’t mean everything goes back to normal.”

Gertrude’s face tightened reflexively.

Then relaxed.

“I know.”

Brandon noticed.

The old Gertrude would have interpreted boundaries as punishment.

This Gertrude was at least beginning to hear them as information.

After dinner, Rosie brought out a toy doctor kit.

She placed the plastic stethoscope against Gertrude’s stomach.

“Good news.”

Gertrude raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

“You have a tummy.”

Nicole laughed.

Brandon did too.

May you like

Gertrude smiled.

For once, a medical statement in the Hayes family did not need to mean anything more than what it said.
