Chapter 2 - The Story Diane Had Already Started Telling

Claire didn’t wait for Diane to reach her.
She shoved the recorder into the gown pocket at her hip, rolled out from beneath the bed, and came up fast on the other side of the mattress with the pouch pressed to her chest.
Noah cried out, “Mom!”
Diane stood so quickly her chair tipped backward.
Claire backed toward the door. “Don’t touch him.”
“You look insane,” Diane snapped.
The sentence landed with ugly precision, because Claire already knew Diane had been building that story for months.
She had said Claire was “fragile” after a panic attack last spring.
She had called her “too emotional” after Noah’s second asthma hospitalization in September.
At Thanksgiving, when Claire refused to let Noah sleep over after a steroid adjustment, Diane had laughed into her wineglass and said, “That child doesn’t need another inhaler. He needs a calmer mother.”
Everyone at the table had smiled awkwardly.
Claire’s husband, Andrew, had changed the subject.
Tonight, Claire opened the door and shouted for help.
A nurse came first, then a resident, then a security officer from the hallway.
Diane moved before any of them reached the room.
She stepped back, smoothed her hair, and said in a perfectly steady voice, “Thank God. She’s disoriented again.”
Claire stopped dead.
Noah stared at his grandmother like he had never seen her before.
The nurse looked from Claire’s bruised cheek to the burgundy pouch in her hands. “Ma’am?”
“She grabbed me in the bathroom,” Claire said. “She hit Noah. She was threatening him.”
Diane gave the soft, tired sigh of a woman carrying someone else’s instability.
“Claire, sweetheart, your son had trouble breathing. You slipped earlier and hit your face. Nobody is blaming you.”
Claire could feel the room shifting around Diane’s performance.
The security officer looked uncertain.
Then Noah found his voice.
“She slapped me.”
Silence.
Diane turned to him instantly. “Noah.”
“Don’t,” Claire said sharply.
Noah’s eyes filled. “She hit me because Mom took her pouch.”
The nurse took one step closer to Noah.
The resident looked at Diane’s gloved hands.
May you like
Claire clutched the burgundy pouch harder.
Whatever Diane had planned for that night, it had not included Noah speaking against her in front of witnesses.
