Chapter 1 - The Slap Noah Took for His Mother

Diane hit Noah hard enough to send his little yellow toy car skidding under the hospital bed.
Then she caught the front of his pale-blue pajama shirt in one gloved hand and yanked him closer.
“Tell me where your mother hid it.”
Noah’s lip trembled, but he didn’t answer.
Claire lay flat beneath the pediatric bed, every muscle locked. Her cheek throbbed where Diane had already struck her once in the bathroom fifteen minutes earlier. Beside her chest was the deep-burgundy hospital pouch she had pulled from Diane’s coat pocket after spotting family-court papers inside it.
Diane leaned down and clamped a black leather glove over Noah’s mouth.
“Lie again, and your father loses both of you.”
Noah’s frightened eyes dropped toward the bed skirt.
Claire covered her own mouth with one hand.
The room smelled like sanitizer and warmed plastic tubing. Monitors hummed softly. Noah had been admitted to Children’s Memorial in Chicago that evening after a sudden asthma episode during what was supposed to be a simple dinner at Diane’s house.
Noah whispered around her hand, “Mom took it because she was scared of you.”
Diane froze.
Slowly, she let go of his shirt.
“What exactly did she see?”
Noah pressed himself back against the mattress and said nothing.
Diane stepped closer to the bed. Claire quietly dragged the burgundy pouch tighter against her body.
Then the yellow toy car rolled out from under the bed by itself.
Diane’s face changed.
She knelt and lifted the bed skirt halfway.
For one awful second, Claire thought she was finished.
A small metallic object slipped from the half-open pouch and tapped softly against the floor.
Diane stared at it and whispered, “She found it.”
Claire looked down.
May you like
It was a tiny silver voice recorder.
And for the first time that night, Claire understood that Diane was more afraid of what had been saved than of being caught hitting a six-year-old in a hospital room.
