CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5
Judith and Vanessa remained at my dining table like guests after a funeral.
Only the dead thing in the room was their confidence.
Judith was the first to recover.
“You cannot blame a man for reacting when his wife disrespects him.”
I stared at her.
“My arm is broken.”
“And my son’s life is ruined.”
I felt something inside me go still.
Not angry.
Finished.
“Leave my house.”
Vanessa stood immediately.
Judith did not.
“You think this is over because you called the police?”
“No,” I said. “I think it started because I finally stopped protecting all of you.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You are a cold woman.”
I looked at the roast beef, the wine, the flowers, the expensive plates I had set with one working hand because Daniel insisted dinner should still happen.
“I was warm for a long time,” I said. “You mistook it for permission.”
Vanessa picked up her purse with shaking hands.
“Claire,” she whispered, “I didn’t know about the loan.”
I believed her.
That did not make her innocent.
“You knew about my arm.”
Her face crumpled.
“You laughed anyway.”
She looked down.
Judith grabbed her coat.
“You will never be family again.”
That sentence should have hurt.
Instead, it felt like a door opening.
“Good,” I said.
After they left, I locked the door with my left hand.
Then I stood in the entryway and cried so hard my knees nearly gave out.
Not because Daniel had been arrested.
Because I had loved him once.
Because part of me still remembered the man who brought me coffee during late nights, kissed my forehead in grocery aisles, and told me I was the safest place he had ever known.
But monsters rarely arrive looking like monsters.
Sometimes they arrive carrying flowers.
Sometimes they say vows.
Sometimes they wait until they think the deed, the money, and the woman are all close enough to grab.
My attorney, Rachel Kim, arrived twenty minutes later.
She found me sitting at the kitchen island with my sling pressed against my chest.
“You did well,” she said.
I shook my head.
“I should have done it sooner.”
Rachel sat beside me.
“You did it when you were ready.”
Then she placed one more document on the counter.
May you like
Divorce petition.
I signed with my left hand.
