CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2

The room changed the moment I said it.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just two words.

I did.

Daniel stared at me as if I had spoken in a language he used to understand but had forgotten.

Judith set her wineglass down.

“Claire,” she said slowly, “what have you done?”

I looked at her.

“The same thing you did. I invited people into my home.”

Vanessa’s smile faded.

Daniel pushed his chair back.

“This is ridiculous.”

The doorbell rang again.

He walked toward the foyer with the irritated confidence of a man who still believed every door in the house opened for him.

I listened to his footsteps cross the marble entry.

Then the front door opened.

A man’s voice spoke first.

“Daniel Mercer?”

Daniel said, “Who are you?”

“Boston Police. We need to speak with you.”

Judith’s face lost color.

Vanessa whispered, “Police?”

I did not move.

My arm throbbed inside the sling. My ribs ached from holding myself too still. But my breathing stayed steady.

Daniel reappeared in the dining room with two officers behind him. One held a legal envelope. The other looked at my sling, the untouched plate, and the phone beside my glass.

“Mrs. Mercer?” the first officer asked.

I nodded.

Daniel turned on me.

“You called the police during dinner?”

“No,” I said. “I called them after the hospital.”

His face shifted.

There it was.

The first crack.

Judith stood quickly.

“This is a family matter.”

The officer looked at her.

“Ma’am, assault is not a family matter.”

Vanessa gripped the back of her chair.

Daniel laughed, but it came out wrong.

“My wife is emotional. She fell. She told the hospital that herself.”

I picked up my phone with my left hand and tapped the screen.

Judith’s voice filled the room.

“My son taught her a lesson.”

Then Vanessa’s.

“She thought she was in charge.”

Then Daniel’s.

“Maybe now you’ll stop interfering in family decisions.”

The officers listened.

Daniel did not blink.

But his throat moved once.

May you like

I looked at him through tears I refused to wipe away.

“You laughed before the recording finished.”
