Chapter 3 - The Childhood My Husband Had Edited

My sister Emily lived twenty minutes away in Chevy Chase.

She had a guest room.

More importantly, she asked questions without answering them for me.

After Lily fell asleep, I showed her the photograph.

Emily read the sentence on the back twice.

“You need to call Anna.”

“I barely know her.”

“Apparently you barely know your husband either.”

It hurt.

I called the next morning.

Anna did not sound surprised.

“Mark finally let you see it?”

“No. I found it.”

A long silence.

Then:

“That sounds more like Mark.”

Anna told me what happened in 1996.

Diane had become obsessed with controlling food after their father left.

Money was tight.

That part was true.

But scarcity gradually became punishment.

Extra helpings had to be “earned.”

Dessert disappeared for bad grades.

Breakfast was withheld when Anna talked back.

Diane weighed both children every Sunday.

Mark learned quickly how to stay out of trouble.

Anna fought.

A kindergarten teacher noticed Anna hoarding crackers.

Their pediatrician documented that her weight had fallen.

Diane’s younger sister Susan stepped in.

For almost a year, Anna lived with Aunt Susan.

Mark stayed with Diane.

“Was there a court case?”

“Family services got involved. It wasn’t some movie where Mom got dragged away. There were meetings. A safety plan. Counseling.”

“Did Diane change?”

Anna laughed once.

“Enough to satisfy people.”

That answer bothered me.

“What happened after?”

“I went home.”

“And?”

“I learned not to argue about food.”

I closed my eyes.

“Mark says you hate your mother.”

“I don't hate her.”

Anna sounded tired.

“I stopped letting her run my life.”

“Why didn’t you warn me?”

“I tried.”

My eyes opened.

“When?”

“After Lily was born.”

Anna had called Mark.

She told him never to let Diane become Lily’s primary caregiver.

She also mailed him the photograph.

The burgundy envelope.

The one I had just found.

“He promised me Diane would never be alone with Lily.”

My throat tightened.

Mark had received the warning two years earlier.

He had kept it.

Then he gave Diane a key anyway.

“Why put a house key in the envelope?”

Anna paused.

“I didn’t.”

I looked at Emily.

“Then who did?”

“I have no idea.”

The photograph had come from Anna.

May you like

The duplicate key had been added later.

By someone inside my house.
