Chapter 5 - The Agreement Daniel Never Signed
Daniel returned with a folder the next morning.
Inside was a draft agreement prepared by a law firm Claire recognized as representing Evelyn personally.
It was never signed.
That did not make it harmless.
The document proposed that if the paternity test excluded Daniel, Claire would voluntarily waive any claim to certain marital assets associated with the Mercer family and agree not to contest Lily’s removal from family-controlled educational funds.
Claire read the first page.
Then the second.
Then stopped.
“This wouldn't even be enforceable the way she wrote it.”
“I know.”
“You know now.”
“Yes.”
“When did you receive this?”
“Before the DNA result.”
Claire looked at him.
“And you didn't tell me.”
“No.”
“Were you planning to sign it?”
“No.”
She waited.
Daniel looked away.
“Daniel.”
“I told Mom I would think about it.”
Claire’s throat tightened.
There it was.
Not the test.
Not Evelyn.
Daniel.
For some period of time, however brief, her husband had considered a future in which the little girl he had raised for five years could be discarded from his family’s world because of a laboratory result.
Even though Lily would still have been the same child.
The same laugh.
The same hand reaching for him at bedtime.
The same little voice calling him Daddy.
Claire pushed the folder away.
“Get out.”
“Please listen.”
“I have been listening.”
“I never would have abandoned her.”
“You considered paperwork that treated her like she could become somebody else’s problem overnight.”
“I was panicking.”
“So was I when your mother dumped a cake on her head. I still knew she was my daughter.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
Claire stood.
“I need you to leave.”
He did.
That afternoon Claire called the family attorney whose name appeared on Lily’s trust documents.
She asked one question.
“Did Daniel’s paternity test ever have any legal relevance to Lily’s trust?”
The attorney paused.
“I can’t discuss Evelyn’s private communications.”
“I’m not asking about Evelyn.”
Another pause.
“No. Daniel is Lily’s legal father. A private at-home paternity test would not automatically change that status or remove her from anything.”
Claire thanked him.
Before ending the call, the attorney added something carefully.
“Mrs. Mercer, the November meeting was never called to discuss Lily’s eligibility.”
Claire sat straighter.
“What was it called to discuss?”
“I think Daniel should explain that.”
Claire almost laughed.
Apparently everyone in the Mercer family had decided Daniel was the keeper of truths he lacked the courage to tell.
That evening she texted him.
What is the November meeting actually about?
His reply came five minutes later.
Mom wants control of my voting shares transferred into the family trust.
Claire stared at the screen.
Then she understood why Evelyn had spent months turning Lily’s identity into a crisis.
