Chapter 1 - The Birthday Daniel Wouldn’t Defend

The first thing Claire saw was Lily’s tiara flying through the air.

It struck the metal side of a champagne ice bucket and disappeared beneath melting cubes.

Before Claire could reach her daughter, Evelyn Mercer grabbed the five-year-old’s birthday cake from the garden table and tipped it over Lily’s head.

Pink frosting slid through Lily’s blond hair and down the front of her off-white dress.

The child did not scream.

She simply stared at her grandmother.

Then her face crumpled.

“This party is for family,” Evelyn said. “She is not one of us.”

Claire crossed the country-club patio in seconds.

She pulled Lily against her, wiping frosting away from the little girl’s eyes.

Then she looked at Daniel.

Her husband stood several feet away in his black blazer.

He had seen everything.

And he had not moved.

“Daniel… say something.”

His eyes dropped.

Not toward Lily.

Toward the stone patio.

Claire felt something change inside her.

Evelyn reached toward Lily again.

Claire blocked her arm, slapped her hand away, then shoved her backward hard enough that Evelyn stumbled into the large ice bucket beside the table.

Several guests gasped.

Claire ignored them.

She reached into the ice, pulled out Lily’s tiara, dried it against her dress, and placed it carefully back on her daughter’s head.

“She is our daughter. You have no right to exclude her.”

Claire expected Evelyn to be furious.

Instead, the sixty-three-year-old woman smiled.

Daniel looked terrified.

That frightened Claire more.

Evelyn slowly got back to her feet.

Then she looked directly at Claire.

“Ask Daniel what Lily’s DNA report says.”

Everything inside Claire stopped.

Daniel’s face lost its color.

Lily wrapped both arms around Claire’s waist.

Claire stared at her husband.

He did not say that Evelyn was lying.

He did not say the report was wrong.

He did not even look confused.

He looked ashamed.

“Daniel?”

Nothing.

Around them, the birthday party had become horribly still.

Claire looked down at Lily’s frosting-covered dress.

Then back at the man she had trusted for nine years.

“Do you know what she’s talking about?”

Daniel finally lifted his eyes.

And in the second before he answered, Claire understood the worst part.

Whatever Evelyn meant—

her husband already knew.
