Chapter 6 - THE CHILD WHO WOULD NOT GO HOME WITH FAMILY
Calvin was arrested on outstanding financial-fraud warrants unrelated to Leah.
Charges connected to the house required further investigation. Prosecutors needed to establish what he knew about Leah’s condition, why the doors were secured, and whether he intentionally abandoned the children.
His arrest did not solve their placement.
Leah could not care for them.
The twins were not ready to leave the hospital.
Lily remained with the foster family, where she slept on the floor beside the bedroom door because beds felt too far from escape routes.
Hannah asked whether Lily would consider a short visit with Megan in a supervised room.
“No.”
“What would make you feel safer?”
“If Rachel comes.”
Rachel could not become part of Lily’s case simply because she was kind. The hospital and child-protection agency established boundaries. She could attend one supported visit because Lily had identified her as a trusted adult from the emergency.
Megan sat on one side of the room.
Lily sat between Rachel and the door.
Megan did not bring gifts.
“I said something cruel when you came into the hospital,” she began. “I moved the wheelbarrow before I checked the babies. I frightened you.”
“You called them filthy.”
“Yes.”
“They weren’t things.”
“No. They weren’t.”
Lily’s mouth trembled.
“Mommy said you used to love me.”
“I still do.”
“Calvin said you wanted her to mess up.”
Megan stared at the child.
“That isn’t true.”
“You did tell people she took pills.”
“I believed she had started again.”
“She said she didn’t.”
“I should have listened more carefully.”
Lily looked at Rachel.
Adults often apologized by explaining why they had been reasonable.
Megan forced herself not to continue.
“I was wrong,” she said.
Lily picked at the bandage on her palm.
“Are you going to take us?”
“No one is making that decision today.”
“That means maybe.”
“It means your mother is still your mother.”
The answer mattered.
Lily remained in the room for fourteen minutes before asking to leave.
Afterward, Hannah told Megan that temporary kinship placement might eventually be considered if Leah requested it and if Lily’s trauma assessment supported the move.
Megan wanted to say yes immediately.
Instead, she asked what would be required.
A home inspection. Background checks. Parenting classes focused on trauma. Agreement that Megan would not use placement to undermine Leah’s parental role. Supervised transitions. Ongoing caseworker access.
Each condition limited control.
Megan accepted them.
When Leah regained consciousness, she could not speak because of the breathing tube. A nurse gave her a marker and board.
She wrote three names:
LILY?
ELI?
NORA?
The nurse told her all three were alive.
Leah began crying.
Then she wrote:
MEGAN?
Megan was brought to the doorway but did not enter without permission.
Leah stared at her older sister for a long time.
Then she wrote one word.
WHY?
Megan did not know whether Leah meant the old report, the missed messages, the lobby, or eleven months of silence.
