Chapter 1 - THE GIRL BEHIND THE WHEELBARROW

“Get that filthy thing out. This isn’t a shelter.”

Megan Walsh shoved the rusty wheelbarrow backward with both hands.

The little girl behind it stumbled. Her bare feet slipped against the polished floor of the emergency-room lobby, but she refused to release the wooden handles.

Two newborn babies lay beneath a yellow blanket inside the cart.

They were small enough to fit side by side between clumps of dried mud. One made a weak sound. The other barely moved.

Rachel Hayes dropped the chart she had been carrying.

“Megan, stop.”

She caught the wheelbarrow before it rolled through the automatic doors. The older baby’s lips had a bluish cast. Neither child wore a diaper.

The girl’s dress was stained with dirt and dried blood. Blisters had opened across both palms.

Rachel bent toward her.

“Sweetheart, where did these babies come from?”

The child stared at Megan.

“My mommy has been sleeping for three days.”

Megan went still.

Rachel shouted toward the treatment area.

“I need neonatal and a pediatric team in the lobby now.”

The girl pulled the cart toward herself.

“No.”

“We’re helping them.”

“Promise you won’t send me back.”

Rachel placed one hand on the handle but did not try to take it.

“What’s your name?”

“Lily.”

Megan’s face changed.

She stepped closer, staring at the child’s brown hair, the small crescent-shaped scar beneath her chin, and the yellow blanket covering the twins.

“Lily Hart?”

The girl flinched.

“You know Aunt Megan?”

Rachel looked between them.

Megan was already reaching for Lily, but the child jerked away so hard that one wheel lifted from the floor.

“Don’t let her take us.”

The neonatal team arrived with warming blankets and an infant transport bed. Rachel kept one arm around Lily while the babies were lifted from the cart.

Megan stood beside them, white-faced.

She was not merely the nurse who had humiliated a frightened child in front of an emergency room full of strangers.

She was Lily’s aunt.

And the unconscious woman waiting somewhere beyond the city limits was Megan’s younger sister, Leah.

Rachel crouched beside Lily.

“Where is your mother?”

Lily pointed toward the western windows.

“Past the water tower. The house with the red roof.”

“That’s miles away.”

“I know.”

Megan reached for the yellow blanket after the babies were removed.

It had been cut from an old quilt their mother made before she died.

Megan recognized the faded blue stitching in one corner.

She also recognized the dark stains near the edge.

They were not mud.

Before Rachel could ask another question, Lily gripped her sleeve.

“Aunt Megan said Mommy was dangerous,” she whispered. “Calvin said that meant nobody would come if I called.”
