Chapter 6 - ROBERT CHANGED SIDES TOO LATE
Robert asked to give another police interview.
Abigail learned that from Nathan rather than from Robert.
That mattered.
For once, Robert was not trying to control how she received information.
His statement did not make him innocent.
He admitted grabbing Abigail’s arm during the argument.
He admitted helping Derek gather household financial information.
He admitted telling Abigail that the equity loan would keep him and Evelyn out of bankruptcy.
He had believed that part.
Derek told him the family needed approximately $120,000 to clear Robert’s remaining business debt and stabilize the household.
Robert was ashamed enough to accept the story without demanding full documents.
He did not know Derek planned to take $185,000.
He did not know about the divorce attorney.
He did not know about the apartment.
He did not know Abigail’s signature image had already been placed on lender paperwork.
He found that out after the ambulance left.
That was why he refused to destroy the “correction packet.”
It was not heroism.
It was the first moment cowardice became more painful than obedience.
Evelyn reacted differently.
Through her attorney, she maintained that Abigail had fallen during “a mutual family dispute.”
She denied intentionally causing the fracture.
She characterized the financial conversation as ordinary family planning.
Derek stopped speaking directly to Abigail.
His attorney did the talking.
The marriage became formal language.
Possession of residence.
Joint funds.
No-contact arrangements.
Preservation of assets.
Abigail’s strongest emotional setback came from something smaller.
The hospital billing coordinator asked who would assist her after discharge.
Abigail automatically said:
“My husband.”
Then stopped.
The woman waited.
Abigail corrected herself.
“My friend Melissa can stay the first few nights.”
Saying it aloud hurt.
She could not return home yet because the criminal investigation and protective-order process were still unfolding. Derek remained there temporarily under conditions arranged through counsel, though he was required to stay away from Abigail.
Nathan helped Abigail secure a short-term accessible apartment near the hospital.
Melissa, a nurse Abigail had worked with for nine years, brought groceries and refused to make sympathy faces.
On Abigail’s second night there, Robert sent one message through Nathan.
I will testify to what happened.
Abigail read it.
Then asked Nathan:
“Because he wants to help me or because he knows they lied to him?”
Nathan answered, “Probably both.”
Abigail put the message down.
