Chapter 5 - THE LIFE DEREK WAS BUILDING WITHOUT HER
Abigail did not recognize Derek’s handwriting at first.
She had spent years seeing his grocery lists, birthday cards, notes stuck to the refrigerator.
AFTER ABBY looked different because the letters were printed carefully.
As if writing neatly made betrayal less personal.
Nathan showed her only documents investigators had cleared for discussion through her own counsel.
The budget was dated nearly four months earlier.
Before Robert and Evelyn moved into serious financial distress.
Before Derek mentioned the home-equity line.
Before Abigail suspected anything.
Expenses were listed down the left side.
Apartment deposit.
Furniture.
Attorney retainer.
Credit-card payoff.
“Parents transition.”
Then a line near the bottom:
HELOC proceeds.
Abigail looked at Nathan.
“He planned to borrow against our house before divorcing me?”
“That appears to be one possibility.”
“But my name is on the house.”
“Yes.”
“So the debt would stay with the property.”
“Potentially, which is one reason the lender requires valid consent.”
Abigail felt physically sick.
Robert had told her the loan was not for his debts.
Now she understood part of what he meant.
The financial pressure had been used as the family justification.
But Derek’s private planning was older.
There were more clues.
Derek had toured two apartments during days he told Abigail he was visiting clients.
He had paid a divorce attorney consultation from a personal credit card.
He had searched the lender’s website for cash-out borrowing options.
Yet one thing did not make sense.
Why involve Evelyn and Robert?
Why bring them into the house?
Why let his mother become Abigail’s daily antagonist if he planned to leave quietly?
Nathan could not answer that.
The answer came partly from Abigail’s own memory.
Four months earlier, she had mentioned changing jobs.
A larger hospital system in Columbus had offered her a supervisory position with a significant raise.
Derek objected immediately.
He said his territory was based in Cincinnati.
Evelyn called the idea selfish.
Robert warned them not to “blow up a good marriage over career ambition.”
Abigail turned the job down.
Two weeks later, Robert and Evelyn moved in.
At the time, it felt unrelated.
Now she wondered whether Derek had needed her to stay physically and financially predictable until his plan was ready.
Then Nathan showed her one more page.
A handwritten list in Evelyn’s notebook.
Keep Abby calm.
No Columbus.
No refinance questions until Derek ready.
Make Robert think it’s for debt.
Abigail stared at the last line.
Make Robert think.
Robert had been part of the pressure.
He had helped restrain her.
But Evelyn and Derek had been lying to him too.

That explained the terror on his face in the hospital.
Detectives were searching a house where Robert might discover he had helped destroy Abigail’s safety for a plan that had never been designed to save him.
