CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5

We arrived at the courthouse at 8:58.

Mark drove us in his work truck while the sheriff’s office had my SUV towed for evidence.

Lily sat between us, bunny in her lap, her small hand tucked inside mine.

My blouse smelled like brake fluid and fear.

My knees would not stop shaking.

But the blue folders were still in my arms.

At the courthouse steps, Evan’s attorney was waiting with a polished expression that faded the moment he saw the deputy walking behind us.

Evan arrived in a cruiser three minutes later.

Not arrested yet.

Not free either.

Just trapped inside the truth he had built.

In the courtroom, Judge Whitaker looked over her glasses.

“Mrs. Whitman, you are late.”

I stood.

“Yes, Your Honor. My vehicle was sabotaged on the way here.”

A murmur moved through the room.

Evan’s attorney stood quickly. “Your Honor, we strongly object to that characterization.”

Deputy Harris stepped forward.

“We have an active investigation, Judge. The vehicle’s brake line appears intentionally cut. The child was inside the vehicle when the brakes failed.”

The judge’s expression hardened.

Then I handed over the first folder.

Not everything.

Just the beginning.

The texts.

The financial records.

The school letter.

The photos.

The timeline.

My voice shook at first, but I remembered what Mark had said beside the SUV.

Tell the truth in the order it happened.

So I did.

I told the judge about the control.

The money.

The threats.

The way Lily went silent whenever Evan entered a room.

The way he had insisted the SUV was safe that morning.

The way he arrived at the auto lot before I called him.

Evan stared at the table.

For once, he was the one with nowhere to hide.
