Chapter 14 - HIS LAST CHANCE
Nolan looked thinner at the final settlement conference.
His company had shut down active work on three projects.
Fourteen employees remained.
The others had quit, been furloughed, or found jobs elsewhere.
Lily felt grief for that.
She did not mistake grief for responsibility.
Priya read the proposed terms.
Nolan would consent to a full forensic audit of NMR Construction.
He would acknowledge that Lily had not knowingly authorized use of her partnership distributions for company expenses.
He would cooperate with the lender’s investigation of the guarantee.
He would surrender all access to Lily’s financial accounts.
He would agree that disputed company liabilities remained subject to legal determination rather than being treated automatically as marital debt.
Their attorneys would negotiate a temporary parenting schedule separately.
There would be no public statement from Lily.
No revenge campaign.
No demand that Nolan humiliate himself.
Just facts.
Nolan read the document.
Then looked at her.
“You know what happens if I sign this.”
“The lender gets the truth.”
“My company is dead.”
“Your company may already be dead.”
“You think that doesn’t affect June?”
Lily waited.
Nolan lowered his voice.
“Everything I did was for us.”
“No.”
His face tightened.
“You don’t get to tell me why I did it.”
“I get to tell you what it did to me.”
Robert was not in the room.
Lily had deliberately kept him away.
This choice belonged to her.
Nolan pushed the document back.
“I’ll admit the transfers.”
“And the guarantee?”
“No.”
“Then we’re done.”
His attorney leaned toward him.
“Nolan.”
He ignored her.
“You’re really going to blow up our family over a signature?”
Lily looked at him for several seconds.
“No.”
She stood.
“You did that when you decided my name belonged to you.”
She walked out.
Priya followed.
Two hours later, Priya formally delivered the forensic findings to the lender’s compliance investigator.
The lender notified Nolan that its internal fraud review was moving forward.
That same afternoon, Lily authorized Priya to convert the legal separation filing into a petition for dissolution of marriage.
No judge ruled that day.
No police arrived.
No one was handcuffed.
Nothing dramatic happened outside the courthouse.
