Chapter 12 - WHAT EACH MAN WAS PROTECTING

They met at Priya’s office.

No dining table.

No family living room.

No baby.

Lily wanted a place where nobody could pretend they were simply having another difficult family conversation.

Nolan arrived with his attorney.

Robert came alone.

Priya sat beside Lily.

For several minutes, they discussed numbers.

Transferred distributions.

Business debt.

The disputed guarantee.

Then Lily closed the financial summary.

“I don’t want to talk about numbers first.”

Nolan leaned back.

“What do you want to talk about?”

“Why.”

Nolan looked at his attorney.

His attorney said nothing.

“Why did you keep taking it?”

Nolan rubbed his forehead.

“Because the company could recover.”

“For twenty-eight months?”

“We had real contracts.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

He looked at her.

Finally.

“I couldn’t fail.”

Lily waited.

Nolan laughed once without humor.

“Your father thought I was a contractor with nice shoes who got lucky marrying his daughter.”

Robert said, “This is not about me.”

Nolan turned.

“It has always been about you.”

“Nolan.”

“You bought their first house.”

“It was Lily’s money.”

“You got us the mortgage rate.”

“Through a bank relationship.”

“You paid off her college loans.”

“They were hers before she married you.”

“That’s exactly it.”

Nolan leaned forward.

“Everything came from him. Every dinner. Every holiday house. Every emergency. Every time something went wrong, Robert Hale wrote a check and everybody acted like he’d performed surgery.”

Lily said, “So you took my money to prove you didn’t need his?”

Nolan’s face changed.

Not denial.

Shame.

“I was going to put it back.”

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“You stole two million dollars.”

“And you gave me the keys.”

Robert stood.

Lily said, “Sit down.”

Both men looked at her.

Robert sat.

Lily turned to her father.

“What were you protecting?”

Robert was quiet longer.

Then he said, “The idea that you needed me.”

Lily had not expected that.

Robert looked at the table.

“After your mother died, fixing things was the only part I knew how to do.”

His voice roughened.

“When you stopped needing me, I kept finding ways to remain necessary.”

Nolan stared at him.

For once, neither man looked powerful.

Lily felt no victory.

Only exhaustion.

She turned back to Nolan.

“Did you sign the guarantee?”

His attorney whispered something.

Nolan stared at Lily.

“I authorized it.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Another silence.

Then Nolan said, “I can’t answer that here.”

Priya closed her notebook.

The meeting was over.

But Nolan’s refusal had given them something useful.

May you like

He was no longer claiming Lily knowingly signed.

Now they needed to prove who had.
