Chapter 11 - Claire Had Her Own Blind Spot to Face
Claire wanted Mason to carry every piece of blame.
For several days, she almost succeeded.
Then Sloane asked a difficult question.
“When did you last review your household finances before this happened?”
Claire bristled.
“I trusted my husband.”
“That isn’t an accusation.”
“It sounds like one.”
“It’s a risk question.”
Claire went home to Maribel’s apartment and thought about it.
Mason handled the mortgage.
Insurance.
Taxes.
Investment accounts.
Claire had always considered that division practical.
Before losing her job, she handled travel, childcare planning, household staff, and most daily expenses.
Mason handled long-term finances.
After Claire stopped working, the imbalance deepened.
Lenora often discussed large financial decisions only with Mason.
Claire noticed.
Sometimes she even resented it.
But she told herself she hated financial paperwork anyway.
That had been her blind spot.
Not causing Mason’s betrayal.
Not excusing it.
But leaving her own legal and financial life almost entirely in someone else’s hands.
Then another memory surfaced.
Two years earlier, Claire received an electronic document requesting acknowledgment of a “property credit update.”
She forwarded it to Mason with one line:
Can you deal with this?
He replied:
Handled.
Claire never opened the attachment.
The document was not the forged signature page.
But it referenced the credit facility.
A fair clue had passed directly through her inbox.
She simply never read it.
Claire called Sloane.
“I want separate access to everything from now on.”
“Banking?”
“Everything.”
“Good.”
She opened accounts in her own name for current expenses.
She placed alerts on her credit.
She reviewed insurance beneficiaries and property records.
She requested copies rather than summaries.
The process made her feel embarrassed at first.
Then stronger.
That evening Mason sent one message.
I’ll sign whatever you need to separate finances while this is investigated. No conditions.
Claire stared at it.
It was the first thing he had done since the confrontation that did not ask her to protect him, trust him, understand him, or wait.
She still did not answer.
