Chapter 10 - Mason Wasn’t Trying to Protect Claire

Mason finally told the whole story before Graham’s flight landed.
He asked to meet Claire in Sloane’s office.
No house.
No family.
No cameras.
Mason looked like he hadn’t slept.
Claire remained across the table from him.
“Start with the call.”
Mason nodded.
Three nights before the confrontation, Graham contacted him through an intermediary used by the family’s restructuring advisers.
The calls came through a voice-masking service because Graham did not want certain conversations recorded in a recognizable voice.
It sounded ridiculous to Claire.
Mason agreed.
“It should have been the moment I walked away.”
“But you didn’t.”
“No.”
Graham had learned that the lender planned to request original property documentation as part of Friday’s refinancing review.
He feared Claire might see inconsistencies in the older home-equity file before the restructure closed.
He instructed Mason to retrieve the original documents from the house.
Mason refused at first.
Then Graham threatened him.
Not with violence.
With exposure.
Graham had copies of messages showing Mason knew Claire had never personally attended the signing connected to the original loan.
If the refinance collapsed, Graham would turn those messages over to the lender and blame Mason for the entire unauthorized transaction.
“You thought he could make you the fall guy.”
“Yes.”
“So you got me out.”
Mason looked down.
“At first I tried to convince you to spend the night with Maribel. You said you were tired.”
Claire remembered.
He had suggested she leave twice that evening.
Dinner with Maribel.
A hotel spa weekend.
She had laughed it off.
That was the meaning of fail again.
The violent confrontation had not been Graham’s scripted instruction.
Graham had ordered Mason to get Claire out before midnight.
Mason chose how.
The ottoman.
The wall.
The pot.
The demand that she leave.
Three earlier details changed at once.
Mason kept looking at the camera because Graham’s intermediary was monitoring whether Claire actually exited.
The security administrator disappeared after Claire left because someone was covering the access trail.
And the financing folder vanished because Mason removed it for Graham.
Claire had spent days wondering whether Mason had become monstrous to protect her from some hidden danger.
That possibility died in the conference room.
He had not terrorized her to save her.
He had terrorized her to protect himself and his father from consequences.
Mason’s voice cracked.
“I told myself I wasn’t touching you.”
Claire stared at him.
“You were trying to make a pregnant woman afraid enough of her husband to run.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“No. I need you to hear the difference. You didn’t lose control.”
Mason looked at her.
May you like
“You planned to scare me.”
That was worse.
