Chapter 5 - The Camera That Did Not Forget
The camera footage arrived through the police evidence portal five days later.
It did not show the entire dining room clearly. The shelf device faced the kitchen island, with the edge of the table visible through the open doorway.
It captured enough.
At 5:18 p.m., Melissa entered the kitchen with Brooklyn.
Brooklyn wore sweatpants and carried the ivory dress over one arm.
Melissa asked, “Are you certain the stain will come out?”
Brooklyn answered, “It doesn’t have to. Callan already ordered another one.”
They moved out of frame.
At 5:41, Callan entered and looked directly toward the camera.
“System off?”
Melissa answered from the dining room. “The panel says disarmed.”
Callan unplugged the camera from the wall.
The device continued recording on its internal battery.
At 6:07, a public-relations consultant called Callan. The camera captured only his side.
“Use the phrase domestic incident. Don’t say assault until we know how far she goes.”
Anastasia stopped the playback.
Dana sat beside her in the hotel suite, taking notes without celebrating.
“Keep going.”
The dinner began at 7:10.
The camera showed Brooklyn reaching beneath the table and tipping her bowl into her own lap.
It showed Callan entering after her scream.
It showed the slap.
It showed him clutching Anastasia’s clothing and driving her backward.
It also showed Anastasia lifting the stockpot and throwing the soup.
Nothing removed responsibility for her choice.
The full sequence destroyed the family’s version that she attacked without provocation.
Then the footage continued.
After police separated everyone and escorted Anastasia outside, Melissa returned to the kitchen with Brooklyn.
Melissa said, “That should be enough for the vote.”
Brooklyn asked, “What if the camera caught it?”
Callan stepped into frame holding Anastasia’s black authorization token.
“It was unplugged.”
He put the device into his pocket.
The hidden truth shifted the balance immediately.
The dinner had been staged.
The business transfer and the physical humiliation were part of the same plan.
But the footage raised a larger question.
Why did Callan need Anastasia publicly discredited if he already possessed her financial token?
Dana sent preservation notices to the company, Solterra, the lender, and every board member.
She did not release the video publicly.
Evidence used for revenge could become noise.
Evidence used carefully could stop a transfer.
Anastasia watched the final seconds again.
Before the recording ended, Brooklyn stood alone in the kitchen.
She looked toward the dining room, then at the dark camera lens.
“I didn’t think he’d actually hit her,” she whispered.
